I have a 2007 PreRunner. Was remote start an available option that year on this vehicle? If it was, can the factory function be added?

I don't think remote start has ever been an option on Tacomas.

Thanks for the reply. However in the time between my OP and your answer I contacted a local Toyota dealer. They confirmed that remote start was not available on my truck but it they did start offering it on the trucks in the 2012, 2013 years. It is not backwards compatable.

With that said, I have seen in other posts and threads, where people have installed aftermarket remote starts. My biggest concern is whether it interferes with the other factory systems such as the factory security. I really don't want to have to carry a two key fobs, one for the factory RKE/security and a second for the remote start.

Really. I checked out toyota.com and didn't see any mention of remote start on the 2014's...

I have been looking into your question myself currently. I don't see why you cant wire in an aftermarket remote/alarm system and just "remove" your OEM stuff and only use the after market keyfob. I haven't confirmed this yet but I haven't looked too hard yet either.

You just use the aftermarket key fob or app if you have the higher models. Everything works just like factory except my doors lock and un lock when getting in or out of the vehicle respectively which is better than stock imo

Are you running one? If so which brand and model? I've been looking at the Viper Smart Starts at the moment.

Yea I have the viper 5901 and use it all the time. My wife didn't want me to pay extra for it, but she uses it more than me and loves it. Highly recommend it. Also mine has the key fob but you can always by the module later if you decide you want to run it off of an app later on.

Not factory but the first thing I did when I got my 2013 DCLB 4x4 was for a shop to install a Viper 5904. The remote start feature was great and became a staple for me each the morning.

    Godspeed.

I'm looking at the Compustar units right now. They seem to have better reviews than the Viper and Python units and they come with wiring diagrams so I can install it myself.

I've heard good things about that brand as well. I just didn't want to tackle the ignition system and mess up warranties and my only means of transportation, but if I had the time I would prob go the route you're thinking about.

I have Avital alarm/remote system and it works great. I can actuate it with the key in the ignition and remove the key while still running, lock it up and go inside if need be (like if the dog is with me in the summer to let the A/C run). I bought my taco used with it already installed, but purchased a remote from Walmart for like $25 and had it added to the system at CarToys. Funny thing, the dealer that I bought the truck from didn't even know it had a remote start option. I found the manual in the glove box and was stoked with the added extra on my new to me truck. I like that it unlocks all doors with one click of the button and doesn't do the annoying chirp.
