I have an 07 off road. 75k miles. 35" tires front arb air locker and rear elocker. East coast regeared front and rear to 4.56. Supercharged.

Driving down the road to work the other morning i heard a sound coming from the rear possibly that sounded like a helicopter. It sped up with relation to the wheels. This was on a saturday. By sunday morning it had gotten louder. Sunday afternoon i could feel it. Same sound except now it was jarring with it.

I had to drive it to work Monday. When i was leaving i heard a horrible grinding clunking noise. I immediately put it in neutral. Still did it. As i rolled into a parking lot the jarring got significantly worse. Almost as if my tires were square. I got out and looked it over. Nothing. Driveshaft looked fine. No excessive play in anything.

I got it up to the nearest shop. It was a tire shop so nothing special. They called me back later saying i tore the rear end out and it would be $2000 for a replacement.

I asked him what specifically was wrong. Ring and pinion, u joint, wheel bearing, axles? He replied with "we didnt open anything up as we don't work on rear diffs."

Needless to say i went and picked my truck up on a trailer that day as im not an idiot. Ive not had a lot if time since to work on it but ive gotten the driver side axle out and its perfect. Ive drained the rear diff but havent gotten to check it for any metal yet. Im off tomorrow so i can get more time in.

Im looking for possible culprits beside the obvious. Could it be the elocker? Ive not used it in a while.

Does it make the noise on the gas? off the gas? or all the time?
Either way sounds like the R&P has broken some teeth!

If the tires roll it makes it. Is that one of the symptoms of ring and pinion failure?

I called ECGS and they said $300 if thats what's wrong.

Like sparkystaco said, it sounds like the ring and pinion or the pinion or carrier bearings are toasted

How long has it been since the regearing was done?

...and....was there any 'warranty' on their workmanship?
