Waaaay back when most of our work trucks and vans were 70s and 80s Ford all were bought new, they were pieces of shit. Never had an engine last more than 100K miles. Needed body work among other things once a year, they rusted out just as bad. Love to eat power steering pumps and transmissions.

I was the first in my family to buy Japanese, an ‘85 4Runner….and haven’t looked back for the last 30 years. They aren’t perfect but much better than what I grew up with. Though Ford has come a long way and have considered buying one. Didn’t want a turbo long term and liked the interior on the Tacoma better over the Ranger. If the Ranger had a N/A V6 would of made the decision harder.

Sounds like someone should of bought a Tundra.

Small Toyota trucks have always been somewhat underpowered, it isn’t some huge secret, yet some people are still surprised. Do you guys not do enough research or test drive them before you buy?

I don't think it's a lack of research or a surprise, it's just that the Tundra is too big and that tradeoff isn't worth it for most.

The power is fun, but the turbo is probably only good for about 70K and will then need replacing. An expensive truck with expensive future costs built in.

Well it is all about compromise, if you want loads of power you don’t buy a midsize truck. They aren’t meant to be race vehicles. They are meant to be an all a-rounder that does nothing well other than hopefully last a long time.

Find the pissing contest of who has the most power rather silly, much prefer who can last the longest with the fewest repairs…than who can get to the next stop light the fastest.

Hah. Some guy in a parking lot that had a 2016 wanted to give my truck a look over. He asked what I had done to give it more power and complained about how the Tacoma was underpowered. I said to him, it’s a little Toyota pickup, when hasn’t it been underpowered. One of the reasons I bought a manual.

I don't care about having the most, just enough power. And honestly, it's not entirely about power, a lot of the perceived power can be delivered with proper gearing and responsive transmissions. Reliability of turbos is not a problem and I don't know why people still think they will only last 70k miles like posted above. Forced induction engines have been commonplace for the last 20 years without major issues. I have driven several well over 100k miles without a single failure.

Believe why they tend to last so long, they toss in underpowered engine, and over build everything else so it doesn’t rip itself apart.

Have been driving them since the 80s and the 22R days…they think the 3.5 is slooow, go drive one of them! lol! My 3rd Gen is a rocket ship compared to my old Toyotas.

I guess anything is better than a dusty heep.

As much as I like the Pro line from Toyota. Why does Toyota build the Pro line, when Toyota is about quality, dependability, and reliability?

Not that a Pro is lacking QDR, there seems to be a market for performance oriented trucks, and the more performance that a truck offers. That's the truck that wins that contest.

Toyota should build the regular trucks the same as they do the Pro series. That's what most people want, and if that is all they built. The customers could buy those trucks for less.

You'd think Toyota was building trucks to make money, so why doesn't Toyota build the truck that offers the most performance?

You don't have to. $3-400 for a tune & you'll be pleasantly surprised. Go for a custom tune though like CVC, KDMax, M&W Nexus ect as the OVTune 2.0 are underwhelming.

I currently have a ‘14 F150 ecoboost and it has 125k miles on it. It is an oil fields truck that sees as much dirt road as paved roads. The only issue it has is a slight shudder in the transmission (probably torque converter) when pulling out. Oil change every 5k and a set of spark plugs back at 100k tires every 25k.
Overall a good truck. The torque comes on a bit slow compared to a V8 but a good truck.
I was concerned about the turbos but they work.

My ex father in law has an ‘82 2wd Toyota. It’a name is the vod, as in vehicle of death. Such a piece of rattling junk. So slow, brakes non exsistent, steering is all loose, multi hued brown peeling paint. I think he’s had it for ten years and the value of it hasn’t changed ever, $2k. you can haul any junk you need to with it.

Have owned Toyotas for the last 30 years, they all have been soft on the bottom and liked to be revved. Never were fast, but will get you where you need to go with little fuss.

100K isn’t good enough for me, needs to go at least 250K without any major repair as I keep my vehicles a long time, my 1st Gen has 434K on it, and just recently developed a tick in the valve train. You’ll be hard pressed to get a turbo to last that long.

My 3rd Gen has waaay more power than I’ll ever use…and find it odd that people constantly bitch and moan about it, if it isn’t enough sell it and go buy something else. The Ranger does pull off the bottom better, sell the Taco and buy one of those if you’re worried about size. Or one of the diesel GM twins for loads of low end torque, though they have their fair share of problems and aren’t terribly quick.

I thought the questions were going to be what size tires can I run or what is the oil change interval. Too many unanswered questions.

Guess they build the Pros to satisfy the Bros! lol! Dunno some of the things they do is down right odd. Though Toyota has never been into all out performance and are reserved.

I have no interest in them, wish they would work on better fuel efficiency rather than bling. Be nice to get their commercial trucks here.
