I need to find a nice watch for when I have to dress up and wear a suit. Some nice ones posted here.

I agree on the looks. I just wish it had a perpetual calendar like the others. Good news is half the fun of owning watches is figuring out what to buy next.

Exactly. If there is any light, and I mean just starlight, it can be read. And the history behind it. I had saved up literally for years to buy a proper watch. Originally I was going to buy a Rolex Submariner no-date, but then I realized the speed at which I was saving was being outpaced by the speed at which the Sub price was going up. I bought the Aqua Terra first because it's just beautiful and not immediately recognizable like the Sub. That actually allowed me the budget to pick the Speedmaster up the following year. I bought both second hand from a reputable seller. The guy basically buys and sells "safe-queens" from people. They're hardly worn when he sells them.

 

I do like the looks of both, but the second one is huge! 49MM would look goofy on my wrist. My Speedmaster is 42MM just like the first one you posted and that's about as big of a watch that I can get away with.

 

I believe it is 49mm at the crown. Actual case size is 44mm according to Citizens site.

 

I don't want to burst your bubble here a week before xmas, but I'd highly recommend NOT getting either one. The Eco-Drive & their Kinetic watches look good in theory on paper but in my many years of being a watchmaker, they are not practical. Their saying, "...never replace a battery again..." is just semantics. They have a capacitor instead which has a lifespan of 7-8 years & costs $60. But that's just the battery, in order to guaranty that it will continue to function, Citizen recommends (read: requires) a complete tear down, cleaning & rebuild of the movement which is $100 from us for a grand total of $160 which is more than half the original cost. Citizen will charge you 2x-3x because the warranty is 3 years & doesn't cover capacitor replacement.

Take the money you were going to use on it & get yourself a nice entry level Swiss made gravity wind (automatic) mechanical watch like a Tissot, (here's the link). I don't know how the other watches got in on this search result page but stay away from the Stuhrlings! They are 3C (Cheap Chinese Crap) quality & not worth the money. If you can afford it, get a Tissot with a Valjoux 7750 movement or an ETA A07.112 movement. $300-$400 more but very accurate & if taken care of there's no reason you can't give it to your grandson as a college graduation gift.

Tissot is the company that started the Swatch Group in the late 1970s, although their 1st acquisition was Omega in the 1950s. If you like Omega but don't have the cash for one, get a Tissot for 1/2 the price yet the same quality.

I have only had Casio tough Solars and 10 + years is not un reasonable life for the capacitor.

Thanks for the lead on the Tissot. I will check then out. I have always stayed away from Automatic Mechanicals because I hate fidling with setting the time and date on watches. I will often go a week or more not wearing a given watch, and I like being able to pick up my casio and knowing that it will be within a second or two of the actual time. Even after a month or better my casios are only 10 seconds fast. Typically I just reset the time at DST each year, they are never off by more than 45 seconds or so.

I even hate watches with a date window that is 31 days based. Having to correct it on months that are shorter is like nails on the chalk board for me.

Dont get me wrong. A nice mechanical is a thing of beauty. I just have not gone down that road yet.

 

Agree with most except the Chinese 3C's. The Seagull movement is just as robust, reliable and precise as any ETAs. It was designed and improved upon by one of the most skilled master watchmaker in China (Master Xu, 50 years in watch making.) Basically they're getting rid of the cumbersome and expensive production procedures of the ETAs and improve on it's reliability. My Seagull has been maintaince free for nearly over a decade and keeping time on par with my Breitlings and Omegas.

Seagull had given ETA a run for their money in the recent years and forcing them to rethinking their marketing approach. My only thing with the Seagull is quality control can be hit and missed depending on which price point and grade you're settling on.

Yes, its made in Texas and it has a slight vibration inbetween 5 and 6 . Other than the small issues , its reliable
