After ~13 years my Ripcurl watch finally did me wrong! Outside my office building on my phone I suddenly felt my wrist go light & a moment later heard a loud crash. Lost a link pin! That sucker was gone, and I wasn't going to look like a fool on my hands & knees for more than a minute, so I channeled my inner MacGyver & made a paperclip work. It'll do until I'm back home tomorrow night.

Damn dude, thats an awful story.

I say refurbish it, his friend looks to have put the wear on it. If it was always your brothers I would so not, but.....

    Just my $0.02.

Looks like a working man's watch. Does the wear and tear tell a story or say something about the wearer(s)? If so then I'd leave it alone. Otherwise, I'd refurbish it so your nephew would have a nice looking watch that belonged to his father.
You mentioned picking it up while deployed. Is it a Seiko or a Haji Shop Seiko?

    I would recommend refurbishing this.

    Sorry, to clarify:
If it was your brothers the whole time, I would not refurbish it. The scratches would have more meaning.

However, you said he gave it to a friend who wore it and probably put the wear and tear on it. If thats the case I would refurbish it so your nephew has a nice new watch.

Good call. You have my vote (not that you need it of course). Wish I had something from my brother before he was killed. He was 6 though.

You could probably get a jeweler to buff the case and there are aftermarket bezel inserts that are pretty affordable.

I’m guessing the model is an SKX maybe? https://www.namokimods.com/collections/bezel-inserts?page=1

Since its a few decades old, if you replace the battery and it doesn't tick, you can replace the entire quartz movement for roughly $50.

    Hammer.

The latest outermost ball is the hour. The hand in the middle is a normal minute hand. The picture is about 1:35.

Ball goes back inward six hours later. The seven ball is slowly moving back toward the middle in the picture.

This was a gift from about ten years ago.
