Started watching some 3rd gen Tacomas off-roading on youtube. So many trucks getting dunked halfway up the door. Does the water not come in? If it is how is the water not damaging everything inside? Been enjoying the videos and looks like fun but I just don’t want to demolish my daily driver if I was ever to try a water crossing

Some people will say SEND IT. Others will say to TAKE IT EASY. Its your truck, do what you want with it. You don't need to dunk it halfway up the door though. And people will tell you at the very least, if you are going to do water crossings, do the diff breather mod. Enjoy your truck!

Dont do any water crossing until you relocate the rear diff breather. If youre just passing no water will come in BUT if you get stuck its only a matter off time when water starts coming in, and these newer vehicles are so reliant on the electronics if u mess it up u could void your warranty

Always a good idea to know how deep the water is and what the terrain is under that water. I’ve done many river crossings but it’s rock bottom and not too deep. Getting into water without researching it is a great way to destroy your truck.

I do water slowly. The air intake is just above the front passenger wheel well.

As rnish above stated the air intake tube attaches to the passenger side wheelwell to an air pocket between (see the front lower louvers where it sucks from).
Do the rear diff vent mod. You will see the front diff and xfer case breathers on drivers side by exhaust and fender liner. The trans has a vent on top no remote hose.
The ECM is in the pass side kick panel inside. Bottomline is now you know where water can get in. If you go in hard and stall and the water goes up the exhaust pipe past the upper bend over the rear axle you got more problems. If comes in doors more. Skid plates I hope as if you nail the rocks you can't see other problems. As mello03 said know what you are going into. Finally watch out for off camber crossings with rapidly flowing water!

Best advice I can give you is stay out of deep water if you love your truck or face the consequences of ruining it. Just saying

Back in the day I used to get into some pretty deep creek and mud hole crossings. I've had water in the cab up past the clutch, gas and brake pedals. Almost up to my knees. Of course that was with old school Jeeps and other SUV's with metal floorboards with drain holes so the water would drain out. I've seen the hood completely underwater on a 1970's Dodge truck. It kept running with no problems later. But that was with vehicles with virtually no electronics to fry.

When I was doing this we had a decent car or truck as our everyday driver and a $1500 beater for bashing around off road. If you broke down a buddy would put a tow strap on you and pull you home. You had something else to drive while you fixed what you broke off road. I don't know many people who would do something like this to a $40,000 truck.

    Any regrets on the X3?
I'm in the queue for an RR, with a month or two left to change my mind.
Never been in one, and don't have any reasonable way to get in one. I'm in an 'all in' or 'not in at all' kinda situation..

    TIA.

Slow, steady, just fast enough to push a wave in front with the front of the truck in the following wave trough. Know what the bottom of made of. If crossing flowing water, keep it below the body panel or you will get swept off the crossing.

Do you have a SxS right now? If so, what year and model?

The x3 is.... badass. I use a family members 2018 x3 -4 seater and its lightyears better than the 2012 RZR xp we upgraded from.

Only regret is that when you get one you’ll quickly spend a shit ton of money in mods lol. It’s an amazing and fast machine.

All good advice. Also, dont take your foot off of the gas, even just a little pressure is good.

And, take off your pants and wade into the water, see how deep it is.
