Take your skirt off, and be a man. Use your mirrors. So many people have become pu$$ies, depending on cameras.

    none yet
any truck/van has the same problem of a flat rear, we have a mix if Ram Promasters (camera above the rear doors and Ford Transit (cam in the door by the plate) the cameras get equally dirty in both locations (view wise I prefer the Ram's high location)
for those that say use the mirrors, yes but no mirror can give you a view of what is blow the top of your tailgate, think parallel parking with a Miata behind you

Now I have seen a mod for installing a washer fluid jet aimed at the camera (I think I saw it here on TW) for washing off the camera

ASPCA will probably complain, but have you considered a Trunk Monkey???

I put Rain-x on mine. The wife's Highlander is just as bad.

My old GMC had a metal airgate, I could see right thru and still haul stuff. Haven't found that yet for a Taco.

For me it's more like this: since Toyota doesn't do the special order thing, I have a $600 camera package on my truck that I didn't really want (amongst other things). If I have to put up with potato-grade resolution, it would at least be nice to have them be at least usable in conditions outside of mall crawling in SoCal. It is curious though that I don't think this is anything that any manufacturer has addressed, especially considering how much safety equipment is pushed these days.

I think it's because it's got enough whiz bang that it looks good at the dealership, and it's not completely useless. Car manufacturers are still coming from a world where they make a product for X price and and mark it up by some percentage to earn money. They have service and upsells, but at the end of the day somebody who buys a car doesn't have to get any of that from you. The doorbell guys are happy to sell you a camera for $150 when it cost them $210 to make because they know you're going to sign up for recurring charges and everybody in that world is comfortable with that sort of business model. Car companies are just dipping their toes into the whole recurring charges concept, but I don't think any auto manufacturer is going to be selling a $210 camera for $210 anytime soon, possibly ever in my lifetime. It's just too deeply ingrained in the culture of buying and selling cars.

On the matter of having that cost baked into the price of the truck, as someone who was born in the Third World, I remember my grandpappy sitting me on his lap and telling me "You need to know the value of a dollar, and if you pay for something get your money's worth." I don't know why he said that, since we didn't use dollars where I'm from, but you get the idea.
