More than we'd hope for, but probably less than what everyone is making it out to be. Most people join online to post about problems. Very few post about being happy.

Actually it was common on 3rd gens for specific years, at least based on people reporting it on TW. We won't get actual numbers from Toyota of course. The fact of the matter is supplier- and process changes happen multiple times in a vehicle generation due to the cutthroat nature of the auto mfg business. Some of those changes lead to component failures.

Would love to see all these links in here to this. Had a 16, 17, 19, 20 and 22 none had a faulty evap. Most complaints were from the pillar, moonroof, 3rd brake light cover or the the ac sweating issue or a/c drain hole related drips, didn’t see widespread evaporation issues. Don’t think it was quite as widespread as you are alluding to or Evan related. Jump in the 4g taco forum there’s a new one everyday. But yes it’s a bad part and Toyota will at some point address through the supplier or change suppliers. As mentioned before each gen has teething problems, looks like bad ac evaps may be on the 4th gen’s list.

So I owned 3rd gens for long time as you already know. The sweating hvac box only ever happened to me few times on a trip from pa to South Carolina in very humid weather. After driving for 4 hours or so I started noticing water pooling up on the passenger floor liner. I had never noticed this happening before around town. It seems more apparent after long drives and especially if using fresh air mode

Yep I’m talking cracked evaps, don’t think that was a widespread 3rd gen issue.

Correct none were cracked BUT Toyota made those folks live with it and said it was normal(myself included). The 4th gen’s a clear screw up from the factory in which there getting fixed. I guess both situations suck but not sticking up for the 4th gen’s but at least Toyota is replacing the hvac box because it’s cracked. I had brought my 3rd gen to the dealer after mine was leaking after the vacation with video evidence and the regional fts told me it’s normal characteristic of the vehicle.

I’m sure there will be later 4th gen characteristics of vehicle excuses but ya it’s a cop out. The rear diff hum I had on my 16 and they replaced the dif and threw in a warranty. Later years it became a “characteristic of the vehicle.”

Yup guess that’s how it goes, they give up eventually on things they either can’t figure out or it costs to much and not an actual “issue” per say especially once it starts getting closer to the next gen all efforts are abandoned

Omg I'd be so pissed if my new $40k+ truck was leaking anything to the interior of the vehicle. I can't believe Toyota is putting out this sort of low quality, while raising the prices. Have been pushing the wifey on a new Land Cruiser. I'll wait now. I'll enjoy my old Toyotas that were built better. My 2001 Lexus LX470 has none of these issues, 23 years later and my freaking heater core or evap box isn't leaking into my truck.
