I don't think a successful water pump change has ever started with that sentence.

I've done four water pumps in the last couple months. I think it's good practice to give your whole system a good flush when changing out anything to do with the coolant system, coolant isn't that extensive.

Expect to lose approx half of the systems capacity. Giving the location of the pump being centralized on the engine, anything above the height of the pump will be lost. Best to just use the petcock at the bottom of the radiator to drain and save the coolant.

Is the coolant so new that it's even worth trying to recapture? Most of us use a service like that to refresh the rest of the coolant system anyway.

I believe full system capacity is just over 2.5 gallons. Draining via the petcock will only drain hoses and radiator. There will be some residual coolant left at the pump during disassembly. Maybe half a gallon or so? A gallon on hand would be a good start to replace any not captured.

if you are doing it for fun - Like I did a few months ago:

    Replace the thermostat.

    Replace the radiator hoses

Flush and replace your radiator fluid.

You replaced the water pump on a 2015 Tacoma for the fun of it? I wouldn't have even replaced the radiator hoses because they last much longer nowadays. Unless my truck had 150-200k miles, I wouldn't worry about it.

It was different vehicles with different issues, same process for each though. It's just good practice to do it all when your in there. Replacing the thermostat and hoses is a good idea as well. Cheap stuff that is easy to replace while it's all apart.
