I can’t seem to find any info at all about when to change out the water pump, cam/crankshaft seals, idler pulleys, etc... I know we have a timing chain in the 2GR-FKS, which doesn’t need to be replaced around 100K like most TBs do… But what about all the other stuff in there that normally gets replaced during this service? I’m still a long way from doing this mileage-wise, but I thought it was really weird that I couldn’t even find any maintenance recommendations for the water pump on our trucks. They don’t last forever.

Change the coolant at the first 50k miles, that will help prolong water pump life.
I don't plan on changing out any of those things unless I have a reason to, such as leaks or noises.

I don’t recall seeing water pump replacement intervals on other vehicles. Usually only when they leak or the bearings start to squeal. Thankfully the water pump on the 3.5 is externally belt driven and not driven by the timing chain inside the timing case so that leaks are visible rather than leaking internally into the oil. Plus, easier to change.

I see no reason to mess with timing chain unless you get noise from it someday. Those are a huge job to replace, so not something anyone does on a schedule.

Right, I consider a timing chain to be a lifetime part (not that they can’t be replaced if it comes down to it). I’m just surprised Toyota doesn’t actually recommend an interval to replace such an important part that isn’t designed to go 200-300K+ like the rest the engine will. Not to mention the damage it can cause when a pump fails and isn’t noticed until after overheating. I know the 3.4 in my 3rd gen 4runner is 90K for the pump and TB. So unless I can find out otherwise, I’ll probably just change mine before 100K.

Timing chain at 100k doesn’t need to happen unless something is wrong that chain should last for almost life of the engine. You are thinking the serpentine belt . That should be changed at 100k. My Tacoma is going to shop on October for a 145,000 km service and I gave them a laundry list to do. All fluids changed plus serpentine belt and a few other things as well.

In the last 30 years I have replaced one water pump on a Chevy 4.3 that started leaking at around 125,000. 2 Nissans and a Honda ran to 210,000 to 250,000 and never replaced the water pumps. Dont know how long the rest of the Ford, Chevy and Jeeps would have lasted because I traded in before 150,000. The last Toyota got it when I changed the timing belt.

Usually the water pump shows some sign its going out.

Change your oil regularly 7-8K miles and you should not have to worry about the timing chain. Most Toyota 'stretch' issues are actually caused by wear and extended oil changes. Water pump, unless defective, should last at least 150K miles and likely significantly longer (I currently have an OE pump at 185K on a 2GR-FE). I would expect idlers to be a 200K part.

Had planned to do mine a 100k, also change the belt and check the pulleys. Good time to do a drain and fill on coolant to.

I've never seen a maintenance recommendation for a water pump on any vehicle I've owned including several 60's models. And a couple of 50's.

Some vehicles developed a 'history' or average failure rate, so chatter was that if you had to touch it for some other work after x miles, just replace it.

Otherwise, leaking at the weep hole (designed to tell you the bearing seal has failed), a wobbly fan or pulley (often meaning the bearing is wallowing the boss), coolant smell (see weep hole), or nasty noises (bearing grind) are your triggers.

Checking the weep hole when doing routine maintenance is usually adequate, as well as noting any coolant smells when you walk by your vehicle.

I also have never heard of the water pump being included in a maintenance schedule nor have I ever had to replace one.

Timing chain is lifetime of the engine unless you get issues same as the water pump. If you do the chain for an issue then also the pump. If it’s not broke don’t stress about it.

Because such an item doesn’t exist. Just over thinking maintenance schedule.

The water pump on my AMC built Jeep CJ-7 went south at 36 years and about 187,000 miles. The one in your Tacoma should be at least as reliable...

Exactly, my '96 still has the original water pump and front cover has never been off in 414,000 miles. Front seal is starting to seep a little but noting to warrant replacement as of yet.
People waste so much $ on maintenance that doesn't need to be done. My 2018 TRD Sport water pump will not be changed either until it fails.

I've seen water pumps last damn near the life of the vehicle and some that went Tango Uniform at 50,000 miles. But I'm a fix it when it breaks kind of guy, especially when it comes to things like a water pump.

Water pump on my 2007 Ford ranger lasted 165k miles, then I sold the truck. I expect my Tacoma’s water pump to last at least that.

Gonna do coolant replacement in about a year. Manual says 60k or 5 years I believe.

As I mentioned, my 3rd gen 4runner has a recommended 90K mile service, which includes the water pump, timing belt, idlers and tensioner. The ‘98 Tacoma I used to own had the same recommendation. You may not have personally ever seen these types of recommendations, but Toyota has made them for previous engines. I’m not “overthinking” anything, just simply asking a question… Is there an official service interval for the water pump, or has Toyota changed their recommendations of 90K on past vehicles, to “replace it when it fails” on their newer ones?
