    Hi,
I have an Ultragauge - so it reads off the ODB port - on start in the morning the water temp compared to the air temp are about 8 degrees different. Is this normal?
What are others seeing - The Mass Air flow sensor is a Hitachi brand, in the truck when I bought it.

They should both be within about 5 degrees of ambient temp after a cold soak overnight but if you aren't having any issues I wouldn't be terribly concerned about it.

I have a Scangauge II and my cold-start temps seem to fall close enough to what the ambient temps are that I don't worry too much. My truck sits in an open carport so it is fully exposed to the outside temps, but if there is any differences, I put it off to the engine being somewhat covered by the bodywork and therefore out of the weather and insulated if only a small amount and that explains any temp differences. I monitor coolant temp as well as transmission temps (TF1 monitors the transmission and TF2 monitors the torque converter). At a cold startup (sitting overnight in the carport) all three temps are usually the same. Engine temps climb faster than trans fluid temps, which during normal operation are usually about 10-20 degrees below coolant temps on an 80 degree ambient temp. day. Towing or hard acceleration make the trans temps jump around a lot, especially the torque convertor temp.

Pretty significant differences in how air temperature and engine temperatures come about. Air temp being a very quick responder, while the truck and it's mass are very slow and are further influenced by radiative loads form both above and below. I would not expect them to be the same. That they are in the same ballpark indicates to me that the are both functioning correctly.
