The price of that radar detector is more expensive than every traffic ticket (including parking offenses) combined in all of my years behind the wheel...more than half my life, I'm 31 been licensed for 17 of those years...I'll continue to drive reasonably and save my coin.

(in Kansas you could get a permit at 14 when I was a kid...)

Yes, the price of that detector is way too expensive. There is a law called the law of diminishing return and that would fall into that category.

My last ticket was 13 years ago. 14 mph over the speed limit and completely my fault. Small town and wasn't paying attention to the speed change (has happened to all of us). $235 and for another $50 they wouldn't report it to my insurance company (extortion if you ask me but whatever). Almost $300. If I would have had a detector at that time under the same circumstances that wouldn't have happened. I bought my current detector for almost that amount and it has saved me a couple of times since I have had it so it has already paid for itself. Like I said I don't speed but every time we get behind the wheel we do something wrong. If you say otherwise you're lying. If I have a piece of equipment that keeps me in check and allows me to know where a patrol car is a mile down the road then I'm going to take advantage of that.
I pretty much have an idea that you are going to disagree with this so it's cool. This is just my opinion and if you choose not to buy one then that is great. The same way you don't like all the stuff on my windshield and I do. Different strokes.

    Cheers

Ill take the $1000 built in radar and added situational awareness over being pulled over and having my insurance premiums go up. Drive smart.

(18 years of driving accident and ticket free, knocks on wood)

One speeding ticket plus an attorney is a minimum of $4-$500 so I don't see the g-note as diminishing returns.

If you're speeding and its your fault why would you hire a lawyer? Pay the ticket and consider it over. So yeah... to me, a detector of that price, is a diminishing return.

But like you I use mine for situational awareness.

.. Just so everyone knows i ditched the project, it was a boredom project but i didnt think it all the way through (would have nothing behind me or beside) So i got the windows and top of the windshield tinted and moved the Radar detector to the top of the windshield on the passenger side and hardwired it in, so its out of the way..

Because the right lawyer will get you off a speeding ticket even when it is your fault, which keep you from having insurance issues.

It was a cool idea, but I agree not worth it. When I was in college (35+ years ago), back in the fuzzbuster days, I had an external detector. It mounted in your grill, and wires ran to the control unit you would mount in your dash. Totally stealth. Wish I could remember the brand.
Now I use the battery powered solo 2. It has certainly saved me several tickets, and if I am ever about to be pulled over, you better believe I will throw it in the console and the occifer will never see it. :D

PS, I never use one in my Taco...I never go over 70 in it (its my work truck), but my other 2 cars are too hard to keep below 70 on the highway!

Hate to be the one to say it, but in this day and age...those kinda herky jerky movements on your part in being pulled over, will likely escalate the situation. Last thing you really want to do when being pulled over is making swift movements, and be stashing/retrieving things.

Doesn't the Garmin have the speed limit for the road you're on in the database?

I would say about 90%. When I first got it I didn't put much stock in it but as I used it, it is pretty damn accurate. I'll catch myself notice a speed limit sign change and the Garmin changes right there with it. But there are still some roads (Some major) that the speed doesn't show up which is kind of strange. It's a nice feature for when you really don't know what the speed limit is though.
