How much noise should my water pump make? Sounds winny like a bad stereo ground. Is this a sign of the pump going bad. Should a good pump make any noise at all?

I couldn't distinguish the WP noise from other noises. Could be a bearing from alternator or idler pulley, fan clutch, belt, etc... A stethoscope can be used to pinpoint the noise maker.

But, no, normally, WP will not whine. If you do think it's the WP, remove serpentine belt and check pulley for play or roughness when you rotate pulley.

A water pump makes a grinding sound in my experience from the bearing going bad and the fins wallowing out the inside of the pump. Like Chuy said, pull the belt and spin the water pump to see if you have any excessive play/noise. A good water pump shouldn't make any sounds.
