The style of filter they use in that kit is known to be a very good, very free-flowing filter that can suck up a lot of crap and without losing efficiency.

Also with a snorkel you will get forced cold air, with the CAI in the video you are not really getting cooler air, maybe more air, but the intake is in the same place.

This has a forced air cowl that goes behind th grill and stretches all the way across between radiator and hood.

It's mounted behind the radiator and oil cooler. Not only is the air effectively heated before intake, but the air has to first pass through the radiator and cooler thus negating any possibly of having enough air pressure to provide a "ram air".

Did you watch the video? It had a ram air intake mounted at the very front of the hood, eliminating underhood heat.

No, according to the video its on top of the radiator so it "may" bring in cooler air. Thats what intrigued me.

Some other threads show no real improvement in performance and the occasional MAF error. Looks like we're leaning towards BS intake.

If you read my thread, you'll see some before and after mpg numbers (my reason for install). I've never had a thrown code. My opinion on CAI is still in the snake oil residue range, but I did record minimal gains in mpg. At best, I hit 422 mile range after installing the CAI and magnaflow exhaust. Unfortunately, I negated those gains by going up in tire size and bolting on some stuff. I've recovered a significant portion of lost mpg by running ethanol free gas. It's so cheap right now, so why not run it?

I'd be curious how numbers would change if the ram was removed and it was run on the underhood box only. If the ram is really drawing cold air, the numbers should change.

The inlet is about 4", top to bottom. It reaches down from above the rad and dips just in front of it. The inlet shrinks to 2" wide before heading to the massive filter box. The air scoop is 24" wide. I took my tape measure out to check 5 minutes ago.

but why no talk of URD in front of the radiator having air forced in as you drive forward?

I think the unit is cool, but managing tire psi, foot pressure, timing lights, maintaining speed limit, or 5 under, monitoring fuel quality (avoid mid and high grade fuels & added costs, I charted mileage for months and they are not a good ROI), daily payload, general maintenance is a better return on investment than a CAI. But again, I was curious because of mpg rather than performance.
