Every 2nd gen has the broken cable housing here, and lots of techs miss it.

I let the owners know but I never push hard. They suck to change and have little gain to the ebrake unless there's complaints like this.

Yeah, I guess I’m luck to live on the south east.
I think I have pictures floating around of my cables somewhere on this forum.
I remember a member need picture of the, for something.

Someone actually commented that they couldn’t believe mine were broken yet.

At this point I was also thinking the shoes need to comform to the drums. The wear mark on the drums may indicate this.
I took all the slack out of the adjuster as I had loosened it during this troubleshooting session. I finger tightened the adjustment nut then locked down. The parking brake cable looked very good. I'll recheck for a broken cable housing.
The old drums locked up solid then I used the emergency brakes.
    Thanks

The drums I bought have some kind of anti-corrosion coating. I emailed the manufacturer if I needed to remove the coating from the inside of the drums and I was told no.
Last drum brake job I did was a gen1 a couple years ago and I used non-coated drums. There were no problems with that job.

Just had the same battle with my truck, i ended up putting it on the lift and putting it in drive and adjusting them tighter till the tire stopped spinning in the rear after like an inch of pedal travel. Been good ever since, they were off like 10 clicks.

I hope you’re not referring to the coating of oil they cover drums & rotors with so they don’t rust sitting on a shelf.

Yes, In my opinion, you just need to go through the bedding process so the shoes and the drums are somewhat 'seated' together. This should help them grab better when using the parking brake. The assembly looks really good and clean to me.

    All stock, baby!
Dagnabbit, @Bishop84! After a statement like that, I had to go prove you wrong by checking my cables while I did a brake inspection and adjustment… BOTH BROKEN! :annoyed:

But like you said, if not causing issues can be let go for a while. But I’m going to do my rears fairly soon so the cables will get ordered forthwith.

Lol, in the category of 'made you look', I just went out and checked mine and both are still good!
I guess I'm one of the luck few!

After driving a while I can tell the parking brake is getting more "grab" although not quite normal yet.

11/25/2022 parking brake is back to normal

The only thing I don't like about these coated drums is that it looks like disc brakes from a distance.

If you pull on the outside of the cable and it looks like this, your parking brake probably isn't doing much :D

Anyone who is thinking of doing this job, for the love of god make sure you have a ratcheting 6pt 12mm wrench and lots of PB blaster on hand. Honestly one of the shittier jobs I've had to do on this truck because of that bolt going down through the top of the frame under the rear of the cab. No room to work or see, rusted in, and of course covered in every bit of mud and dirt ever driven through.

Edit: Sure its not as bad of a job if your dont live in the salt belt and dont drive thousands of miles of dirt roads every year haha

I went out and snapped a pic but you and @TnShooter beat me to it. Basically the same picture.

Mine still functions pretty well. Nevertheless, I have a new set of cables from Rock Auto to put on when I go through the back brakes; OEM were unobtanium. Two online sites let me order them, but both canceled the order after the fact.

The adjustments are in the cab under the center console, and in the drums via the adjuster star wheels. Nothing on the cable itself if that's what you're asking
