there is a recall out on the spare tire carrier on 1st gens right now, so thats where she got that from.

op, id put some kind of rubber barrier between your tire and frame and go on with it.

spare tire mount failure (1st generation Taco's) due to extreme rust... chance of the spare falling off while driving.

not excessive wear- just a indentation on the sidwall. It can be avoided by just changing it's mounting postion once in a while.

took my spare off the other day and saw some. wasn't too bad. my bigger concern is how rusty the lug holes are getting.

Hello ... my 2015 Tacoma has 8K KMS and I was checking my full size spare to see if it was something that I could include in the tire rotation. The spare tire was raised tightly and when I lowered it there were 4 fairly deep groves rubbed into the tire sidewall. They are not deep enough at this time to affect the integrity of the tire, but it is cause for concern to me and in my mind something that should not happen. I will mention it to the dealer tomorrow when I take it in for the first oil change.

I've noticed this over the years too, been thinking of putting some rubber strips in between the frame and tire.

Same problem here. 2015 DCSB with less than 10k.

I guess I'll look into some sort of flexible material to insulate the sidewall from the frame.

Hello .... as I expected the dealer said that is "normal" and response from Toyota Canada is deferred to the dealer. Rather than spend the time fighting on the phone I fixed the problem myself. In the forum there are others that have similar issues and have come up with similar solutions .... old fire house etc. put in place as a cushion. I was going to drill holes and mount rubber grommets but for simplicity sake chose another route.
The fix I used was to take 8 pieces of 6" long 3/4" garden hose (rubber), split them and then slid them onto the tire receiver under the bed and positioned them where they would meet the tire. I wire tied them in sets (across 2) on each of the 4 main members to hold them in place. This seems to work fine and will prevent any further damage.

As a side note (after reading through the forum) I installed a cable lock (cut to size using cable clamps to secure the cut end ) that goes from a factory pre-punched hole in the tire receiver and the end with the lock would go on, just protrudes through one of the rim bolt holes enough to get the lock on. Cable is short enough and strong enough and given it's location under the spare that removal by bolt cutters would be difficult. The cable gives some flexibility when lining up the wheel. A key removes the lock so I can lower the Tire in the designed fashion. Hopefully the custom lock will be enough to discourage theft.

Be sure that the hoses o not trap salt and sand back up there and I'd check / drop the tire occasionally just to be sure.

Also, Be sure to grease up the key lock you add and check it as well - I added a cable to my prior trucks hanging spare and the padlock rusted up and I could not drop the tire when I did get a flat ....

I've got a 2015 TRD OR with 1500 miles and I dropped my spare to replace it with a 285/70/17 and AM wheel. I noticed the groove / rub marks also.

Is anyone still experiencing this? I have. 2013 with just 20k miles. Just had a flat, and he spare wouldn't hold air. Upon further inspection, I found the rubs. I don't think it was because the spare was loose. f1a005262d9b0aa97b0a0aaa7f50539e_ed58a8885b1b6e43e13713244094dcd8151965cb.jpg852e88a51520a89d8468274975ad6e36_dbc5a01b1997a15a022376e34f0d2c98429bcbc6.jpge6b1504fe3a9ea4d85be0f937625c936_93c5c0a422711addcb8a9452ba11d35110f121f2.jpg9449d241b79d5f154bb7d091b2c64828_80e43ee3a839adedc4ef9df5a505cf83c8516298.jpg

No they all do it. Expansion and a contraction along with vibrations.

Looking / zooming in on that last picture where the rub mark is over the "traction" small lettering debossed in the tire side - it looks like the lettering has not been rubbed off. It leads me to believe that this location is not so much worn, than indented with a "memory" of the under cross mounts. Regardless, it does appear to negatively impacted the tire sidewall. Perhaps a direct contact with the Tire manufacturer may give some info on any quality / life concerns ??? JIMHO

I don't think this should be a concern. If it was Toyota would be open to law suits from spare tire failures. I've never heard of an failures and I've been a Tech for a long time. Just memory indentations and they would go away after running it for a while.

I ended up putting some rubber strips up in there to cut down on this.

Are you certain that it is abrasion and not just indentation? The tire will conform to the shape of the metal support, so it will show the shape. Typically this does not mean that it is actually worn.

I put a carpet remnant on top of my tire and winched it back up there a couple years ago. I take it off twice a year to check the pressure and oil the moving parts in there and it seems to be working great so far.
