This is not the diff that's currently on my truck. It's a spare that I have that I am going to be installing an Aussie locker into in a few weeks. I wanted to strip it all down to get ready for the install and to clean out all the gear oil before bringing it into the house.

Now this stuff is all new to me and it's the first time I've ever opened one of these. There is a pretty obvious wear mark into the inside of the clam shell from what I can only assume is the outside of the ring gear. 90 degrees from that on the other side of the pinion gear there is also some wear but just a small spot.

Like I said I'm a newb to this but I assume this isn't normal wear over time? What would be the cause, bad carrier bearings?

Talking to other people it turns out these marking are more than likely just machined into the case from factory for clearance. When I looked closer at them I can definitely see uniform "etch" marks that appear to be from machining.

Looks like I'm in the clear.
