Thanks for the suggestions. I was just curious how people transported wood because I can't really recall seeing firewood in some of the pictures of this style of camper. Not that the firewood transportation would really impact my decision. I'm already sold on the style of camper after my last couple trips. I'm really wanting to see a drifter with side doors before I'm completely sold on either one .

either could mount a basket, i personally plan to use the drifters l-track to get my front runner rack up there when excess storage is needed for surfboards, gas, wood whatever. Trasharoo is a great idea tho, never thought of that.

i second wanting to see the side doors on the drifter, as for swing out tire gates in parking situations this could be huge.

for what it’s worth, I didn’t go with the GFC, as the deal breaker for me was weather (more seals to deal with etc). I expect some cold nights, and a heater is sure to follow. The Drifter seemed like the happy medium between FWC and GFC for a 4 season solution. I spent a winter in a Sportsmobile, and have since been looking for options for the truck. Just my two cents, both are great products IMO. Good luck -

Can also store it on a rack, the Prinsu is low profile enough it should work with a GFC and Drifter as long as you haven't swapped out bed rail caps.

I'd be wary of using a trasharoo to haul firewood for extended periods of time - the material used in the bag is of poor quality and is not particularly abrasion or UV resistant. For $50 you can of course just get another one, but it sucks if it rips on you in the middle of a trip.

Wow. More competition! I still can't decide between GFC and Drifter. Guess I'll just keep waiting and enjoy seeing how all these options look when finished.

I always haul my wood in a 5 gallon bucket. We’re required to have one in California per the campfire permit fineprint, so it kills two birds with one bucket.

As much as I love increased competition I just wish at least one of these companies was around a year ago.

That looks to be similar to the drifter. I have a feeling the drifter guys have a few nice touches on there's that make a big difference though. I wonder how AT is going to seperate themselves from the competition.

Disclaimer: I went with the GFC.

This was a good reminder that my permit had expired so I got a new one, and just to clarify for others it's just water and a shovel that are required - bucket is not mandatory. Not that having a bucket around is a bad thing.

In their example instructions they suggest using a bucket to pour water on your fire, but it seems my 5 gal jerry can of water keeps me legal.

You’re right - sorry. I wonder if it used to be a bucket and it’s changed, or ... more likely ... I’m getting old and forgot. In all my years of camping here I’ve once had a ranger come by and check (over 30 years ago). I once pulled into a campsite in Montana, parked the truck and went for a bike ride. When I got back I had a written warning, not a citation, from a FS ranger for leaving a hot firepit. It noted that my license # was recorded and if it happened again I’d be cited. The warm firepit was from the previous occupant! Now I always check the fire pit even if I don’t make a fire. Anyway, I always have water too.

No apologies needed - it caused me to check digital version of the permit I keep saved in my e-mail/phone to see if that was in the fine print. That led to me noticing it had expired in 2017 so I got myself up to date. I have had my permit checked twice now in the past 10 years living in California.

Although your experience with the warning would have initially had me ticked off about wrongful persecution - it sounds like it's turned into a good habit that could prevent future hassles and prevent forest fires (in smokey the bear voice).

If you want to talk about convoluted permit requirements that never get checked it's the NF woodcutting permit requirements. Never seen any rangers while wooding. They require a fire extinguisher per chainsaw, and a size 0 or larger shovel at least 46 inches long within 25ft of the saw, and then apparently extra shovels if you have more than one gas can - but they don't have to be any particular distance from the can. The best part though are the smoking instructions:

"Smoking shall be done while sitting in an area cleared of all flammable materials. The area must be at least 3 feet in diameter. Burning material shall be extinguished and cold to the touch before it is discarded."

I've always interpreted this literally and pictured someone in the nude or only in a nomex loin-cloth, with all body hair removed, sitting on a rock, in a circle of bare dirt. Smoking a Winston. Cotton is flammable after all.

And after all that they seem to imply you can throw your cold butt into the woods....

I find it funny that none of these manufacturers are saying why the timing is the way it is. They all had to wait for the patent to run out on that style opening truck bed tent. I don't remember who had it but they built them elsewhere (Australia maybe?) and didn't really do much in the states. Their patent just expired opening up the market for all the new vendors.
