I made that exact case to the moderator for the VO buildout/mods thread to be re-opened (very politely/respectfully), and only weeks later when I specifically asked for some kind of response did they simply tell me no, it's not up for discussion..............

So yeah, apparently somebody just needs to start a new wedge buildout/mods thread so we can have the exact same discussions there instead.

There's a Drifter thread on Expedition Portal under the Pop-Up Camper section now for this very reason. I too like to read all the different wedge/pop-up threads for inspiration and general enjoyment.

Hi All, We have interior wood build that was a prototype for a friend. We've upgraded to Goose Gear and are happy to give away our prior build. It fits a long bed. It worked great for our Vagabond Drifter and it would work well for other wedge campers. It's easy to install and remove and it's free. It also has a wood connector between the two pieces for a stealth bed. We also have a floor only bedrug (doesn't go up the sides). It goes as a set - if you want the bedrug, you get it all. We are in Seattle. If you are interested, let me know in the next week. Looking to move it out of our garage.

I'd love to get a wedge, but the height makes it a no-go for me. I'm currently weighing my options, and, out of curiosity, is there a company out there that manufactures a camper with an integrated side-folding clamshell? While that design does have its disadvantages compared to the wedge, it would allow for a camper that's flush with the cab with mid-size bed length. It would also likely look far better than one of the alternatives I'm looking at (locking tonneau cover, mid-rise rack, hardshell RTT mounted flush with the top of the cab).

My truck with lift and 32" tires is under 7' tall. I fit into parking garages/home garages...

What's the height restriction requirement for you being top of the cab? Concord/Bay Area doesn't have that many parking garages that are under 7' tall… and the trails aren't that tight unless you go up to the PNW often.

I'm on 33s (which measure in around 32-1/4" under load, and I'm planning to move to 34s or possible skinny 35s).

Home: Carport compared to Softopper (slightly below cab-height). I park next to it, but the beams stick out a bit into "my" parking space and my concern is that I may impact it accidentally with something taller (it's a tight parking lot, and a tight parking stall). There's a part of me that wants to chop the outer edge of the thing and pray that nobody narcs us out to the HOA.

Work: The secure parking garage at work (downtown Oakland) has a 6'7" clearance. I don't usually drive in, but I do swap it out for a company vehicle and leave it there for long stretches when I'm doing field work.

That would be pushing it even with my truck with a bare roof Vagabond Drifter (no rack, no solar, no fan). Time to move or park outside the carport!

We bought the place only a few months ago, so we're stuck here awhile. Street parking is a no-go, for a variety of reasons. Not planning on switching employers anytime soon, either. So, I'm just trying to make do with my situation, hence why I'm looking at cab-height solutions.

Oh I just had an idea for you… can hright, rear flipping. I would not say that it is a 4-season with the tent though. Should work fine in CA.

Very cool, but that pricing... wow. $15,625 (estimated) for the lowest trim level on a 6-foot bed seems absolutely absurd to me.

Yeah, I get that, but I don't see how that can be worth the price of two GFCs based on what I'm seeing on their website. I'm curious how many orders they actually have, given that their deposit price is five times that of a GFC, the website doesn't present any information about lead times, and there's nothing visual detailing the various trims (some of which are in the $30,000 range). It seems like potential vaporware to me.

I will say, though, I do like the rear flip. I'm guessing that you sleep on the overhang portion and have the entire bed available to stand/sit in. Kind of like a reverse FlipPac.

If i were contemplating a new camper I'd go the Trademans shell like ETAV8R, especially with a long bed, which I don't have, but, the simplicity of a shell to crawl in under adverse conditions, and otherwise carry an Oztent or a Swag, or sleep cowboy (on a cot).. I bought into my unit just prior to the WedgeTent craze, it is great, stand up in the bed, sleep on the rear flip-back, acts as an awning, still a Tent that has to be set up..not a wedge unit, call it assorted oddity

Good discussion on the closure of the other threads. I’ll save my opinions on that for another day. But I have nothing but love for those folks. I haven’t been over to expo for a while but I don’t see why there couldn’t/shouldn’t be a non brand specific camper build out thread. As was said before there was a lot of good stuff that came out of those especially in the early years of the “wedge boom.”although I have moved on recently from the wedge scene I still like helping out in anyway I can!

OK I'll start one. Hope more folks can add to it so it doesn't just seem like an extension of my build thread.

I had no idea that thread was closed. Why? If I were going to get a wedge it would probably be the VO. I made a comment in that thread once and it was canceled/removed. Then I was banned from making anymore comments in the thread. Lame.
