Was planning a trip to Colorado this spring, but was put on hold with covid. We decided we are going this week, so I was low on time to prepare and couldn't get more skids in time. So I decided to make some stuff this weekend. Viair mount is 1/8 aluminium that I had from another project. The skids are 3/16 a36 that I picked up at the steel yard Friady night. I need to put a couple drain holes in the transmission skid at some point. After making the tranny skid, the exhaust was clearly a problem. It looked like if you slid over something on the front 2 skids, your exhaust would be ripped backwards as you came off the tranny skid. That would be worse than just smashing it, so I make a kicker plate. Not sure how well it will work out, but I'll let you know. I may trim it up another inch or so, still debating. I'm getting a re-route done soon, so I didn't want to build a full skid just to redo it. The Viair mount is done and in, but I didn't have time to hard wire the power in yet. It will also be run to a distribution block with QD fittings and a pressure switch. Leaving in a few days and I have a ton left to do.

Do you have a picture of the overall skids? Are you using the factory front and adding on?

I have a front RCI skid. That first pic is the rear of the RCI skid back.

Or did you mean off the truck? I can take a pic from the front end back if that would help.

That was pretty easy. Would have been a lot easier if I had 5052 aluminium handy instead of 6160. 6160 doesn't bend well. It took a few tries to get the bottom offset to bend after heating without cracking. Other than that, it wasn't bad.

I plan to do this same thing. Did you go with 3/16?

Yeah 3/16. I think it's plenty strong. No deflection at all when jacking up the truck on it.

I actually got a few PMs about it. I had no intention of making more, I just couldn't find what I wanted, but I may look into it. Would need to make probably 30+ of them to make it worth the effort depending on what a vendor membership costs, but I may.

It shouldn't be if you can measure the angles. Plasma makes it go a lot faster if you have one, but don't do it without socks on no matter how hot is it outside...

I'm not a fan of plasma unless it's CNC. It's too precise and my cut lines are super wavy haha

I clamp a piece of 1" square tube down and my torch has a guide ring that follows the tube. If I cut at the right pace for the metal, it cuts cleaner than my band saw. If I cut by hand though, it looks like a crayon drawing. I just can't do it without a guide.

I can cut 2' of 3/16" steel in maybe 30 seconds. I've cut up to 1/2" spring steel, but it wasn't pretty. I don't use it past 3/16" or maybe 1/4" unless I just need to hack something off. It's easier to power up and go than to drag out and fire up a torch, or burn through 2 cut-off wheels.
