    Whats interesting is that the back left and right in the pic is about 50 inches deep with water causing the reflection...

    It had rained heavy the days before going into these caves...

    This one is in Mojave National Preserve in Socal. Mitchell Caverns.

    I visited Wind Cave in SD many years ago... before digital photography was a thing. Hope to make it back someday! Quite a drive for me, but the northern plains and ranges are absolutely amazing.

    The reflection is beautiful in your photo!

    But chest-deep water? No thanks!

    The caves I visited are nearly "dead," as in: water is no longer percolating through them and transporting minerals. No pools, no rivers, no dripping water from above... Well, except for one stalactite, early in the tour, from which hangs this tiniest, most pathetic little drop of water, suspended in perpetual inadequacy, doomed to be the punchline of every tour guide's spiel.

    Perhaps someday this stalactite might shed its droplet, conferring its centuries of vested geologic wealth to whatever lies beneath it. Or perhaps someday, some drunk fuckhead will obliterate the whole cave trying to evade the cops in his brother-in-law's can-am.

    Hard to say at this point. But I'm damn glad I got to tour the cave last weekend.
