    @WestCoastCole you win. I love shots of tall buildings like that. I've tried doing it a few times in downtown Portland with no success.

    @JoeTacoma02 and @davidpick thanks. This was my first trip ever to a big city like New York and I was absolutely amazed. Would love to live in a big city like that (without all the people haha). Was an amazing trip for sure, just wish our CDN dollar wasn't so brutal. But I have to say Shake Shack is one of the greatest places on earth!! Will send Murph PM shortly!

    I like this... Actually it isn't the rule of thirds, that is what I use at least from time to time and I think about it :). The Golden Rule (Ratio) I am most familiar with in architecture and woodworking. I had no idea that it is also used in photography but makes sense, a lot of sense in some circumstances.

    The Golden ratio is also represented as a Phi Grid. Turns out LR 5 has an overlay which is the Golden Section overlay and actually is a Phi Grid. I've always used the thirds overlay which is the default, I had no idea there were other overlays in the Develop mode. The [O] key (not Zero) allows you to cycle through the various overlays in develop mode when in crop and will get you to a Phi Grid. Once again learned a new trick on photography and TW...

    You can also press Shift+O to change the orientation of the overlay (e.g. move the focal point to a different corner)

    That is actually The Fibonacci Sequence which is the series of numbers: 0, 1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, 34, ... The next number is found by adding up the two numbers before it. The 2 is found by adding the two numbers before it (1+1). There are two paintings I can think of that demonstrate this, Mona Lisa and The Pearl Earring..

    Rule of Thirds was taught to me as such: it is more a rule of thumbs, a way to compose an image, that an image should be imagined as divided into nine equal parts by two equally spaced horizontal lines and two equally spaced vertical lines, and that important compositional elements should be placed along these lines or their intersections.

    If I can find some of my old photoscience projects I'll further explain.. best I can do posting from my phone at work

    Does it still hold for photos taken last week or are we starting over today for just a week? I just got back stateside and have some photos from my trip that might work for this but I have to go through them.

    Yep Murph nailed it. Baptism by fire Don the more you do it the more you learn. Wing it and you'll learn and no one will have a clue that you didn't have a clue going in :) Just a suggestion if you start with the rule of thirds the golden ratio isn't that far off that. Don't think anyone is going to shoot you if don't hit the "golden" spot. Odds are your autofocus in liveview has the rule of thirds built in on one of the options.

    Really wanted to do this one but real life chit got in the way. Provided the real life chit doesn't get in the way this week I would like to try a landscape this week. Hopefully in addition to the real life stuff if it gets above zero, the sun comes out, it stops snowing, and.... Hey Murph I really enjoy your pics but it's been awhile, just saying! :D

    Rules state from the time the challenge was issued to midnight Sunday. So it was issued last Monday the 4th and is due Sunday the 17th.
