I used to have a non-iS version of the f4 70-200. Great lens for the money. I have a f2.8 now for the lower light performance. The f4 was significantly lighter though.

Worth waiting for an f2.8? And did you get IS?

Quick answer is that yes I would wait and buy the f2.8. More detailed answer below:

If you are shooting action (read kids sports, soccer, etc) indoors or even outdoors, then I would wait and buy the f2.8 or consider the f4 with IS. For me I have the f2.8 non-IS and it is a great lens. The f2.8 IS was just too expensive (and heavy) for me and more lens than I can need at this point.

If you are shooting more outdoor and landscape type photos or you are finding yourself carrying the lens long distances in a pack regularly, then I would go with the f4 non-IS simply for the weight savings. Early versions of the f4 were also faster focusing than early versions of the f2.8.

Outdoor shooting typically has enough light to get past the f4 limitation. When you add sports action f2.8 helps a lot. I personally prefer the f2.8 non-IS over the f4 with IS but that more likely comes down to preference or cost.

My last recommendation is to rent one and see if it works for your needs before buying. Many times the part of the rental cost can be used towards a purchase depending on what company you go with, especially if they're local and not online. I'm not a professional, but if I were to shoot for a more meaningful event I would rent nicer gear than I can personally justify owning. If I were a sports photojournalist I'd have the 70-200 f2.8 with IS.

I got the f2.8 version One with IS for reasons you mentioned. Kid, sports, low light, etc etc. it’s my go to lens and I don’t regret buying it for one second.

I’ve done all my kids photos with it, Xmas, birthday, Halloween, etc etc., and have probably paid for the Lens already. He’s getting into sports now, and it really shines in that setting.
