I think my real question is...what exactly does f-stop do?

Controls amount of light entering the lens and controls the depth of field.

How does that differ from exposure?

Aperture, ISO and shutter speed make up exposure. It's called the exposure triangle. Let me see if I can find it for you.

ISO is how sensitive to light the sensor in the camera is.

This is a good example of using a telephoto lens and a large aperture. A telephoto lens will compress the photo. Ie makes the background look closer than it really is. You see how the background is that smooth blurred out image (That's a 2.2 f/stop) and the people really stand out? That's how you make your photo's pop. You isolate the subject from what's around it. I wasn't going to get into how the lens do things yet to keep it simple but saw this on that article and figured I'd throw it in while it was there.

Now when we get into flash photography all kinds of things change around. But that's for a way later time. You need to get the basics down before you start getting into all that jazz and changes things you thought you knew before. lol

Think I understand. F-stop controls your "depth of field". Higher f numbers equals more of picture in focus?

Yes. If you use a higher f stop, it allows less light in requiring a longer shutter speed allowing more exposure for other items on the background to come through

If you were to use say f8 for the photo that @medic2230 posted, you would probably set your shutter speed to a slower speed allowing the background to also come in to focus

Correct. But if you stop it down too much you can get into a thing called lens diffraction that can actually soften the image and make it out of focus. Example: Just because your lens will stop down to F/32 doesn't mean it's a good idea to do it.

From what I've been reading lower f numbers are for portraits, middle numbers around 8 are for best clarity, and higher numbers are for landscapes/wide angle shots that need everything in focus. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Every lens will have a sweet spot on it. Where it’s at it’s absolute best. That may be a stop above wide open or it may be around f/4 or f/8 even.

That all depends on how you as the photographer want it. I like to shoot portraits wide open. Landscapes I’ll usually shoot from around f/8 to f/11. Wide angle again depends of what you’re shooting. Wide angles are great for getting right up into something. Put that shit smack dab in the lens and go for it. There are rules and then there are rules you just break sometimes. As the subject gets further away the depth of field increases. At 4 foot away you may only have 2” in focus. Move to 12 foot away and you may have 12” in focus. This is shooting wide open.

That’s the nitty gritty. But let’s stick with yes you got it right. :D

Brad and Bash. Originally worked with grunt style but then branched out and started doing his own less “in your face” designs, but still working with grunt style in the fact that grunt style does the printing through “grunt style custom.”

Personally I’ve never been a fan of grunt style lmao.

You know medic... you should really have a YouTube channel where you teach people about photography. You seem to be pretty knowledgeable in this arena. And you do a great job of simplifying concepts that are otherwise difficult to explain. I have tried and failed to explain simple concepts when it comes to Dslrs and the accompanying settings, and what they are used for. When to use ect... but noone really understands what I am saying, because I am not a good teacher nor do I have any more experience than any other dslr owner.

I am not a man that has a way with words as you seem to be.
You should really think about it. You have the equipment and the knowledge to get it up and going. There are other photo heads on YouTube but they dont really seem to have a grasp on the information and also a way to get it across well. And in this day in age its probably the only way to really have a shot at making a decent paycheck in photography
