From what I understand of portraiture there are two key things that contribute to subject isolation. The first is aperture, lower aperture value creates background blur at a cost of DOF on your subject's face. The second is focal length. The longer the focal length the more compressed the background becomes when you step back from your subject and use the zoom to frame as you would like. I have certainly seen a lot of people using the nifty fifty mainly because it does a pretty good job of isolating subjects with low apertures (1.4-1.8) and it's relatively cheap. A step up to another popular lens the 85mm 1.8 is a few hundred more but still relatively inexpensive. Full disclosure: I don't shoot much in the way of portraits!

All good info, with one more note. Lens length also depends on your sensor size. The lengths he posted are traditional for full frame. For my crop sensor camera, my 35mm f1.4 lens is equivalent to a full frame 50mm, and my 56mm f1.2 is my 80mm equivalent. For straight face portraits, I really like the 80mm equivalent. I'll post some pictures later tonight when I get home of some I took with it that hardly needed and touch-ups.

Fancy new makeshift camera bag so I don’t have to worry about falling on into in my bag.

You should try and get a silhouette picture of some of the tall building in SLC

I was out last weekend with a bunch of MTB riders from the Denver area, but my favorite places still have a few feet of snow on them.

Seeing all the stupidity related "HeLp I'm StUcK" posts in the Utah Recovery FB page, I'm not sure they are wrong to.
