Cannon, Nikon, and Sony. I have the EOS version, it’s great for critters and long distance.

    Not an Entry:

We went to Raven Rock state park yesterday and got to see this Apache helicopter flying a low pass down the river. I had to run to get to this gap in the trees so I snapped the photo about 1/2 a second too late. Luckily you can see how low they are flying. Pretty amazing to see and I just had to share it.

Not familiar with Sony, or Nikon for that matter. Mostly just looked really quick at the Tamron website. I’ve herd that there are mounts for mirror less that space DSLR lenses properly, but Haven’t looked into it.

Haha I saw that too when editing. One of my neighbors who just moved was fixing up a bus in his garage. Looked super nice. Never got to see it completed though.
I’m hoping I can a least amount of grainy pic today with it but my hopes aren’t high. I just don’t think the mavics camera is meant for photo taking. Maybe I’ll just try and do a video and then a screen grab from there. Maybe that will work :notsure:

    @uhplifted

Your Mavic should be able to take a great photo, my Spark takes great photos and videos. Are you pulling it straight from the SD card? I've noticed that the photos stored on the DJI Go App are really grainy, but the same photo on the SD cards are fine. I think its because the App just takes a screenshot essentially at the same time a photo is taken.

BTW, do you have your part 107?

I have had luck with that before using Sony Vegas to grab a screenshot. I agree I don't think the camera's are geared for super cool dusk photo's but maybe I'm using it completely wrong. It is an older drone.

I pulled straight from the SD. I think on my computer it looked less grainy, but the file uploaded to TW looked way more shitty.
I do not have the part 107. In fact, I don’t think I’ve even done the FAA registration. This looks new to me. I’m going to double check and make sure it’s registered today before taking it out again.

Ya. I’ve got the OG Mavic. The video quality is always great but pictures seem to lack. Maybe we just need better training with it to get those good pictures.

Yeah.... At a minimum it needs to be registered and honestly, I think all UAS pilots should get their 107. I wouldn't be surprised if its required soon, so might as well get ahead of it and get one now. It isn't that hard, just a 60 question exam.

I do like the fact that I can take a raw image so that leaves me a little room for editing. They're still grainy as all get out though

How new is the required registration thing? I’m 90% sure when I got my Mavic this wasn’t required. I don’t fly it enough to keep up with things. But I will definitely register it and then look in to the 107 thing.

I don't know for sure, but probably at least a year, maybe two. The FAA has a whole Drone Zone website that can answer all your questions. They (the FAA) has been cracking down on unlicensed pilots, unregistered aircrafts, illegal operations (flights in no fly zones, at night without waiver, without required 3 miles of visibility, flying for commercial purposes without a 107, etc.) and handing out fines (sometimes heavy). Its not something I would take lightly.

The one I use is from the office. I don't know if it's registered or not and other people here in the office fly it. All I do is take it up to 100-150', directly above my rural house, take pics of the sunrise/sunset or storms approaching, then come straight back down. Once I save enough for my own I will register it so I can take it places. I'll take that 107 thing though. Thanks for the heads up @megillet

I haven't flown it (aside from taking it straight above my house twice in the last year, which, is probably also not allowed with these new regulations) in probably a year at least. The only time I've ever flown it outside my LOS was in Joshua Tree BLM land where I flew it about 1.5 down a firepath road outside of our campsite to see what was around us worth exploring.

I'm definitely going to register, or make sure it's registered during lunch today. I'm never going to use it for commercial purposes so I don't have to worry about the 107 as much, but will still look in to getting it. I saw something about a possible $250k fine, so ya, I'm not gonna fuck around with that.

FYI, doesn’t matter if you don’t own the unregistered aircraft or not. If you are the one flying it, you’ll get the fine. If I were you, I wouldn’t fly the office one anymore.

A great podcast to keep up with all the changes is Ask Drone U.
