I think Tricky Dick works considering the subject, it’s all about context of the subject matter.

These are from the 2019 Miramar Airshow in San Diego... The compression on the images make them look terrible. GAH!

There’s the HB air show this weekend. I would like to try and photograph some. What lens do you use? Also can you give me any pointers? Do you use auto focus for these shots or all manual? How do you shoot them settings wise? Do you do shutter priority or all manual? Appreciate any insight you could give me

    Brian,

On my Canon 80D, I use AI Servo in camera for focus so it will adjust focus in real-time and auto-focus set on the lens. That said, you need to keep your button 1/2 depressed to keep AI Servo engaged or you’ll have a delay while auto focus tries to adjust when try to take your photo.

Shutter was 1/2000, with F Stop wide open as possible and auto ISO. In camera, the clouds and sky looked blown out, but they pulled through in post through Skylum’s Luminar which means you’ll need to shoot in RAW.

My lens is a Tamron 150-600mm and I was tracking the F-18 manually while adjusting zoom in real-time as well. This was at about 400mm. Lastly, I had high speed burst mode on as well which also needs to be timed well so that you don't max out your camera’s cache too early.

It definitely takes some practice and some getting used to. So practice on what you can before your desired birds are in the air. Prop planes need a lower shutter speed ( 1/1000 ) so that you can keep some movement in the propellers.

Thank you for that write up! I don’t know enough about my camera to know if it has the AI servo mode or stuff like that and I certainly don’t know how to use it if it does haha. But I will do my best to use what you gave me and hopefully capture a few good ones. Really appreciate the advice!
