LOL never seen that before, cute! At first thought it might be the mile high club and the Concorde jet...

But your on the wrong side of the River :) Nice shot! I spend more time on the Wi. side of the river than the Mn. side to be honest and had it to do over again would live on that side. Most of my Eagle and bird shots are from the Upper Mississippi National Wildlife Refuge over there. I do have Baldies fly over the house from time to time but not the same as the river and the bluffs, hard to beat it. Did catch some different birds in La Crosse a couple of years ago when I was shooting Eagles. Blue Angles

The photo was from a day trip I took while my friend was at work. Really had no clue where to go or what to do, but I saw a flag up top and went and took some photos, lol. Only thing that sparked my interest while visiting. I tried to see minneapolis' spoon and cherry when I left, but they were setting up for something and I couldn't get over there.

As for where my friend works, she's just working at the gap at the mall. Woman needs to get a real job, she has a darn degree! Lol. And I heard all about the mayo clinic while I was there. I had no clue before. Main thing they talked about was the rail line they detest being put in. She's originally from killkenny, so I don't know why she cares too much, lol.

Wondering if I should turn this one in instead :p. Tho I took it on my phone.

Hmm I am not the judge but I do like that too, understand about the cell phone vs. DSLR pics though. Which is why I ended up with 2 camera bodies. Although my cell phone camera really sucks, so real camera it is.

It took me a long time, but there is a LOT to see and do around here, if you like the outdoors that is. Never ever dreamed I would end up in the Midwest. Now I would have a hard time leaving. Well except during the winters LOL. My father died of cancer and a head hunter happened to call me at the right time while I was living in Asheville, NC, figured I wasn't smart enough to cure cancer but could help those that might. So ended up here, research sucks to be honest and working with those that are sick is much more satisfying and where I eventually landed. There are hundreds of jobs right now at Mayo and it will continue to expand, tell your friend to get her butt in gear NOW LOL! The rail I am not opposed to. 3.5 million people up in the Cities and a lot to do and see compared to the rural areas. Options are good...

I love the outdoors, but my friends weren't help telling me where to go. They're inside I hate winter people, lol. I actually hiked about a mile where i took the backpack photo.
I should have done a little more research before I left to go up there. Oh well, I should be back in a year or so.
As for her getting a job, she has a literature degree. Not much help for the medical field. She told me she wants to get a secretary type job. I'm guessing her career aspirations have turned to shit since we studied abroad together.

If the rail follows the road, I saw that it will really only effect 20 something houses nearby. and 2 little towns. Can't imagine it'd be much louder than the highway traffic, and they would stop trips during the late night hours.
Now I;m wondering if I should go up there for a job. Though I'd just be looking at hospital security, haha.

Up all those steps, oh I hope not! There are so many places worth going and not a lot of people don't know about them it takes some exploration.Well next year let me know your coming and I would be glad to guide you, or at least send you some places to go.

Literature degree is actually a transferable degree although she would need to know medical terminology. And some jobs actually will spend a couple of months teaching that while paying you. It is in demand if she has a good grasp of Language.

Yeah the speed rail will not effect that many people. When they wanted to increase the RR trains coming through with coal and LP that is a different story. Don't want an ambulance with someone dying waiting for a train to pass for half an hour. Sand from the river for fracking is the same thing. Have a number of helos for bypassing that but they are busy flying all over the country.

I have helped in the investigations for a number of people from other Countries trying to steal information that was private, although it expands to more than that. At best the FBI (white shirts) comes in and you can only have them escorted them back to their country of origin, can't do much to foreign nationals. Physical security (blue shirts) are also important and I have dealt a lot with them too. If your seriously interested let me know in a PM and I can introduce you to some people. If you have a background in computer or network security I can help you get a position ASAP. Still have to go through the HR firewall but once your through them your in. Office of Information Security has become a PITA but guess could cut you a break and help seeing how you own a Taco LOL. OIS and everyone else has a job to do too, they are all for a reason :)

Well, it is 3:30 am and I forgot to post earlier but I thought some of you may enjoy this anyway. Spent 10 hrs volunteering at the Sovereign Lake Nordic Center this weekend. Best part of the weekend.....huge snowfall, great scenery, and it warmed up to -10 Celcius.

I know this was a past challenge but I have to say I CRINGE when I hear the phrase "crank up the ISO" used. I go NUTS if I have to take my ISO above 400. I try to shoot EVERYTHING at 100 if at all possible. lol

I hate going above 100-200 myself. But you can still catch some cool photos in low light by cranking the ISO for a faster shutter.
    (My challenge theme btw, lol)

Yeah. I just hate the noise at high resolution. Shooting JPEG at a higher ISO with low resolution isn't so bad. I normally find myself shooting RAW at full 20MP. I have to sometimes not be so picky. lol

Nice job, everyone! Sorry for taking so long to get back to the forum on this. Thanks everyone for you participation, I know it can get busy this time of year. Some comments and critiques (such as they are!) below. Without further ado...

Love the sparse-ness (is that a word? feels like a word...) of this photo. Has a very wintry feel to it, even just from the overall mood, not just the snow on the ground. I'd like to see this with the color temp / white balance skewed more toward the cooler end of the spectrum to give it that extra cold feel. Bonus points for featuring a Tacoma!

Well done on capturing a quintessential aspect of winter for a lot of us! Fire is difficult to photograph, but I can hear the crackles and pops and almost feel the warmth from this one!

Beautiful pup! And you NAILED the focus, which is not easy on moving targets. Love the shallow depth of field, plus the color of your dog vs the white of the snow and essentially desaturated background just makes it pop.

I like this shot. Simple theme, macro-ish and with good depth to separate the foreground from the background. I think this might have been a stronger composition in portrait (vertical) as opposed to landscape, just to give a little more breathing room to the branch, but that's just getting nit-picky.

Beautiful view! Makes me want to head up to my local ski area, as this reminds me of the drive up from my place to nearby Stevens Pass. I feel the chill from the color temp and the symmetry of the photo with the curvature of the road really draws me in. Well done!

    =====

Hopefully I didn't miss anyone. You all certainly did not make this easy!

And the winner is... Mike, Cold Iron

Anything with lights in the picture, yeah those are just examples. My first thought was Christmas lights but not everyone has the chance to do that. And that may not be the best picture in the end, so it is pretty open to anything with lights in it :)
