Outside of my passion for photography, I am a videographer. Last year I graduated from post secondary film school. I had the opportunity to write and be a cinematographer for a project during that time. We recently submitted it to a film festival where it won "best short". I have now released the short 5 minute film on my vimeo channel, I would be honored if you guys would check it out. Feedback always appreciated!

In order to make the thread more active, maybe we could all share how and why we got into photography, or atleast have a curiosity for it! Cheers!

Rather then trying to make an entire tutorial on adding smoke to and image I found a few on youtube that explain everything pretty well. I did break my image down a bit and took a photo of my ghetto studio I set up in my office. Sorry I am horrible at making tutorials even though I've trained half a dozen retouchers.

    Here is my set up.
    Screen Shot 2017-09-29 at 10.44.26 AM.jpg

Here is a quick breakdown of how I started adding the smoke to the image. I ended up using about 10 different smoke captures for the final image.

Here are the youtube videos on shooting smoke and how to use blending modes in photoshop.

I am happy to answer any questions you all might have (maybe this isn’t the right thread for this, I will leave it up to the OP).

What did you use for the colors? Unrelated note I am out for this weeks challenge and I will be traveling for the next 5 weeks so I won't be able to participate again till November.

The technique is called the Harris shutter effect.

I set up the jar and dropped a match in that I blew out as I put it in the jar.

Took 3 photos with the camera set up like yours a few seconds apart or even use 3 different matches to get them.

Load all 3 photos into PS at once.

Make a new blank file so you have 4 tabs total open in PS.

Digital photos are made up of 3 channels. Red, Blue and Green.

Copy the red channel from the first photo and paste it in the new blank file you created. Then go to the next photo and copy the blue channel and paste it in the new file. Same with third photo and new file.

You now have a new photo with all 3 channels for a finished photo in it. Anything where all 3 channels overlap with be normal color. Anywhere they don't will be the color of the channel you copied and pasted.

Check out a tutorial on YouTube or google it. You can do some neat stuff that way.

Hey that's neat, I use alpha channels for a similar effect but never knew about Harris shutter effect. I will have to play around with that.

    Shoot, it's Saturday!

Been busy climbing, not sure I'll be finding a levitation picture tomorrow in Seattle in the rain.

I kind of levitated up this climb... But i didn't take the picture, just posed for it to make it beautiful.

Damn no entries meant to be an easy one. Should we extend a week or change topic?

This is about learning. It doesn't have to be perfect. Point of the thread is to try new techniques and use your equipment.

My levitation skills were not up to the challenge :(
I was going to take a picture of a shattered bottle and call it "failed levitation".
