I think there are 2 different ideas going here. When she is there the seat belt light/dinger comes on.....same as if I put a case of beer there.

What I'm talking about is the airbag light "on" and "off". It works when I sit there or any of my other friends over 150......even if I don't sit with all my weight on it (I'm 220).

Do you have seat covers installed? these can have an effect on presence sensor sensitivity, or perhaps the sensor itself is faulty (it wouldn't be the first one).

Either way, take your truck back to Toyota. As your situation clearly presents a life hazard to a vehicle occupant, I'm sure they will remedy it..

Sounds to me like it's working correctly, like I said, in my 09, my 80lb son doesn't set it off unless he has something else weighing him down some. Don't want an airbag deploying when a child is in the fornt seat. I would think that the weight break for this would be in the 70-90 lb range, give or take. If the setting was 20 lb, a small child, or a baby and a baby seat, would have it turning on (and yes, a baby should not be in front, but auto manufacturers need to take that into account for the dreaded "I'm-a-dumb-ass liability" symdrome.

Called my friend at the dealer and he told me the seats answer to the air bag when around 100lbs are present. He told me the seat covers I have could increase this tolerance. But he also told me that someone that small may not benefit from the air bag being deployed. He said he could look at it, but if it works fine when others sit there the sensor would not be bad, its just the weight not beng what it needs to be.

    I agree.

...although, given some of the input here, I wonder if the weight limit for the airbags has been changed over the years...

You should take your vehicle to your friends dealership & ask them to put that statement in writing on a 'declined to repair' work order... I doubt the dealership would provide you with such a document.

The seat sensor is not meant to protect smaller passengers from securities provided by an airbag, it is there to prevent passenger air bag 'nuisance deployments' from occurring (per insurance company pressure) as most people use a vacant front seat for temp storage (groceries, briefcase, whatever..), & airbags are very expensive to replace.

Federal & State laws say that children under a certain age/height must be in an approved child safety seat FACING FORWARD, & in the rear seating area (if possible). If the rear area is inadequate (access cab, 2dr, etc..) then the vehicle manufacturer must provide manual shut-off for the passenger airbag. In the front seat area, a child properly secured in an approved safety seat facing forward will gain little protection from an airbag as it would not even reach the seat occupant, however, many people install child safety seats backwards (rear facing) in the front seat disregarding the hazards (& law) to accommodate themselves in dealing with unruly children, & this can be lethal to the child in an airbag deployment (hence the requirement for a shut-off mechanism)

Seat sensors have more to do with Insurance costs then child safety, as anyone over a certain height (ie-not requiring a child safety seat) would most certainly benefit more from not being tossed thru the windshield, regardless of weight...
