Okay I have no idea what state you are in but regardless you should not be paying any oversized or weighted tag on a tacoma. Someone screwed up. Same happened to me in NV when I registered my truck. They typed that my truck weighs 55,000 or some b.s. and wanted $600 for registration. Look at your registration at what they claim your vehicle weighs. DMV screwed up.

In WI our tags have letters for the weight limit. Tacos almost always get a "A" (the lowest) that is only on the rear tag not the front.

Your truck weighs roughly 4200 - 4500 pounds. Let's see what the state tries to say it weighs.

I always thought weighted had more to do with use than actual weight of the vehicle

All trucks in WI get weight tags. As do Cargo vans and some SUVs. I've even seen them on a few CUVs. It has to do with the potential wear and tear a certain vehicle can do to the road. And the vehicles weight has something to do with that.

A few additions to make me feel cool.
Take a look at what they listed the weight of the vehicle at. Like I said they screwed mine up in NV and when I got them to correct it the price dropped to half the price. I knew it was wrong when they told me what I owed and inquired as to why but you know DMV! So I just paid it and looked after and sure enough they added a 0 to the weight. I expect the same happened with yours.

Well according to this it might be legit if you told them you might tow.

All trailers in North Carolina must have some form of plate on the trailer itself. The weighted tag needs to be on the truck. Private, noncommercial pickup trucks, registered with regular “First in Flight”-type license tags, may trailer a combined total load of up to 9,000 pounds.Aug 17, 2016

Now if you never tow anything then you should not have to have it but if what I read is correct if the truck and your load are in excess of 9K then you run the risk of being ticketed for being overweight in NC without the weighted tag. I would say you would be pretty safe without it!

What does your registration claim your truck weighs? I doubt you are required to have that tag. I am sure your DMV screwed up.
