All other gopher tortoise I run into were a third that size at best. That one had been enjoying whatever was planted in a hunter's food plot just south of Opp Alabama.

I used to have one that size living in the field in front of my house. Only discovered the hole after having built the house and bushhogging for the first time. Figured it was abandoned but saw as the grass was always neatly mowed around it. Then saw it make a break for the tree line one day but didn’t follow it. Some long time later saw it crossing my driveway and running for that hole in the yard. It was off on direction maybe 4’ but zeroed right in as it got close and dive into the hole.

I think that is a sulcata instead of a gopher tortoise. Gophers have a scute (bony plate) above their neck and sulcata do not. That was probably someone's pet that either escaped or was set free when it started getting big. I would check around to see if someone is missing their tortoise.

ya know, I think you're right...it was oddly large and hadn't constructed a burrow, it was more like a depression that it was retiring to at night. It was early spring so it either hadn't been there long or it overwintered (which disturbs me a little). Maybe they eat feral hogs...

And for the next round of “Name that rust with @RustyGreen ”…
Spent some time walking the family farm today. It’s just north of the Saratoga Battlefield National Historical Park, so these are the modern finds…just a few to start, I’ll get to the big stash next time!7D751854-3413-4AE0-B2D2-973901A515F0.jpg3D8607A8-B3C4-4E4F-BEA5-DD6F42E6A02C.jpg3FB0BA60-1C55-4013-BB62-814BAC9E2309.jpg

The wagon looks like a Chrysler product. There was a '58 Dodge Custom Sierra with similar chrome but the roofline looks later, like 60/64.

...Can't see the clunker for the trees...

    1964 Chrysler

Dodge and Plymouth shared similar bodies but only the Chrysler had the distinctive rear quarter side trim.

    1942, 45-47 Ford.

Civilian vehicle production was halted for the war years, all the manufacturers first post war vehicles were carryovers from 41-42.

I'd like to see more pics of that station wagon... but you're too far away for me to come save it. What a shame. It looks like it might be salvageable.

Out walking the acreage today, found someone's old target. I have lived here going on 30 years so it has been laying on the ground that long, it's aluminum btw.

    KIMG2895.jpg

Also found this old field stone wall, probably a 60 foot section still standing.

    KIMG2898.jpg

    KIMG2904.jpg

A critter has been munching on this piece of tree.

    KIMG2903.jpg

I hung the pot on a tree for safe keeping. The snack tree is behind it and the wall all the way back.

    KIMG2908.jpg

All found within 50-75 feet of the trail.

    KIMG2909.jpg

Found another target too, amazing how long old galvanized stuff hold up. :oldglory:

The distinctive grill bars in groups of 3 so close to the light and the pontoon style fenders.

The 68 Nova grill a few days ago, now that was a tough one.

I'll play the @RustyGreen game. These are all at Amicolola Falls State Park in GA. The story goes that the road went right by the top and moonshiners would sometimes miss the turn and run off the edge....falling to their death. There are more car parts along the trail that I can't seem to find pics of in my history.

Here's the view from the top of the falls:

You can see the stairs that go to the bottom. There are parts of bumpers that are under the stairs. Most people step right over them and don't even notice. My wife was the first person to point out the various car parts scattered.
