Close... it's not a straight sickle-bar mower, but rather a binder, which, when towed behind a tractor or four-in-hand team, would cut and bind grain, and spit sheaves out the back. These were in turned 'stooked' (five sheaves stacked and arranged to allow for drying). Once dry, the sheaves are forked on to a wagon, and taken off to be threshed.

The lack of tall grass around it seems to indicate that hadn't been there very long

I'd take that home and use it for a toolbox in the back of my truck.

It's so heavy I have to have my buddies tractor to move it. It would look cool in the back of a pick up but because of its size & weight it would kill my mpg's. It's gonna be a shooting table over on my range.

I love Arkansas. About 6 years ago my dad had a dog wander up and start hanging around his house. After a few days he got tired of it so we caught it and he went to take it to the address on the collar a few miles away. When he pulled up the long driveway a naked ~20 y/o girl jumped out of an above ground pool and ran in the house. Guy who came out of the house wasn't too pleased to see him but I'm pretty sure it made my dad's year.

The dumbest part was that the pool was far enough away from the house that if she had just stayed put and kept quiet he would have gone and knocked on the door of the house w/o ever seeing her.

yes, I called a paramedic thinking that they all had anti-venom on them...I learned a lot that day. Do try to get a picture of the snake if there happen to be different venomous species about and which hospital has "your snake" jeeez!!!

It is fine. hair of the dog.jpg

That paramedic was as much as the treatment! High deductible plan but employer baited us into it by putting $$ into an HSA (one of those saving accounts for medical costs) and that covered it thankfully. The doctors rolled me into Xray "to look for a broken fang" by the way. I told them to get bent... and they left me in the hallway for about an hour. If you know what a sliver feels like, I reckon you shouldn't fall for that one. Might have saved a grand and some radiation I didn't need.

So they can see how quickly your body is reacting to the bite or venom. Like any other blood poisoning, there is the tell tale inflammation that travels outward from the source. The paramedic marked the first two circles and the time. I got to "C" in the ER and it stopped advancing and I didn't require antivenom. I received a low dose apparently.

I found this lone brightly colored leaf in the yard, every other one within sight is dull & brown. Almost like Mother Nature put it there just for me, right on the path I have walked hundreds of times since Autumn.

    Oh wow!

Years ago my family rented a cabin in the Sierra Nevada's. I needed a break from all the "fun" and took the dog for a walk on some back trails. We got back into the thick of it and stopped between two large boulders. I remember I heard a very distinct rattle and stood very still for about 15-20 seconds. The rattle began to get louder and louder and I knew I had pissed something off. I wasn't sure where to step next as the entire forest floor was covered in leaves. After about 30 seconds and short, but pleading prayer the dog and I took off as fast as we could. No snakebite that day, thank you Jesus! I was wearing sandals too. :anonymous:

I have a bunch more snake pic's. Still love 'em. I have run into large diamondbacks and pacific timber rattlesnakes that would not report. I don't think the pigmy has a rattle. edit: yes they do
I remember stopping a truck because of a loud grinding noise. Turned out to be a canebrake in the ditch next to me rattling. I had the engine, AC, radio all running and the windows up! Coolest ever was a wild rubber boa
on a trail in the Cascades. Looked like liquid pyrite!

i found this "science hippie" (ZFrank True Facts reference) in the woods too. Maybe more about her later...
