amen! My mensuration professor/ also taught fire behavior and basic, made us all read "Young Men and Fire" Norman Maclean. Mann Gulch was a flashy grass deal on a steep hill. I don't know if everyone gets that kind of exposure but we always had their experience (that story) seared into our consciousness. I am kinda a conservative Rx fire guy but it's saved my butt a few times!

Every grass fire I’ve been on we back burned from the road if we weren’t in the black. We never hit it head on. Mann Gulch and ther was one other one in the early days of Wildland operations that claimed a few lives. We just had a refresher field day and went over some recent close calls that injured a lot of guys…Rx burn in a heavy load of flashy fuels, let their guard down and wind changed direction, guys were running to the truck thinking about deploying their shelters and with in 15 seconds the fire had reached their truck. Lots of guys were burned pretty bad, one guy did infact die but not directly because of the fire…he laid under a utv that ultimately was used for egress and the guys that piled in had no idea he was under there, ran him over bad

Not gonna happen here, we’re predicting a very bad season this summer with how wet the winter was out here. My first due alone scares me right now. Heavy loading of flashy mixed with scrub brush and greasewood with sporadic hardwoods. And everything out here has thorns…and rattle snakes are everywhere… lmao anyway, back to crazy interesting things found!

Found this neat little birds nest on the edge of the woods, it is about 6-1/2 feet off the ground.

    KIMG2984.jpg

The closed side faces South, all the wind comes from that direction here.

    KIMG2985.jpg

The inside is not very big, larger than an egg but smaller than an good sized apple.

    KIMG2986.jpg

I'm not much of an outdoorsman so I have no idea what kind of bird the builder is.

The severely rusted door really adds to the "direct to video" horror movie vibe.

Oh there will be some mods all right
Found a legitimate message in a bottle from 2015. Stopped for a little breather and it was sitting there in some debris on the riverbank. Awesome find on a fantastic day.

Any Hoosiers watching?! My family would all go geode hunting in Brown County at least once a spring. We found plenty but it seemed like one in 5 had cool crystals or a decent void inside.

I found my first arrowhead on an island in Lake Monroe- but I put it in my shirt pocket and lost it the very next time I caught a fish. I learned a lot about stinging nettles there too

I always fancied that it is a French blade handle that was traveling up the Deerfield after the massacre with the same name in 1704. I think the invaders came south down the Connecticut River but might they have taken their captives a different route to the Hudson River and north to Quebec? The Mohawk assisted the French that day and the road west to Albany is known as the Mohawk Trail. It runs adjacent to the Deerfield River until you hit the Berkshires. It was in the river bed about a mile west of I-91 which would have been 3 or so from the massacre itself. Anyway, lots of history in the area before and after that so it could be anything…
