s-l64.jpg old ebay picture from link above.

I'm going with that ring behind the hook of an old choker set. It seems that the eye is pulled all apart (the pig tail looking bit). The ring is spread apart and the hook is gone. It's for pulling a log or logs to the landing during a logging operation. This one had an accident. Maybe made for an ox team but used by a steam donkey that pulled it apart. What say ye?

Wild guess, but it looks like it goes in the campfire and you'd place a pot to cook in on top of it?

Had one as a kid. It’s 100% sterno stove or camp heat like the photo I posted. Better than the liquid fuel but heavier if I recall.

Yes it’s hiking equipment for sure.

Funny story about this snake. I was on the opposite side of the knot and noticed what I thought was a lizard’s tail poking out from behind the knot. It was 6 inches or so and I was thinking fudge me, this lizard must be HUGE! So as I walk around the knot, much closer than I should be as I’m expecting to see a lizard, sitting on top of the knot is this massive snake, just staring at me. It scared the begeezuz out of me. Before I could pull my phone out to capture the snake in its entirety, it’s slithering back into its tree hole home.

Maybe it's a Midwest thing? There's a shoe tree I pass every other weekend when I pick-up my daughter. It's next to an old junk yard(could just be a hoarder), but there's literally dozens of shoes up there! Pretty gaudy, but it makes me smile.

    Shoe Trees

    ChatGPT:

"Ah, I see! You're referring to the phenomenon where people throw their shoes onto trees, often creating a whimsical display. This type of shoe tree can be found in various locations as well. However, it's important to note that this practice is not necessarily encouraged or supported in all areas, as it can be seen as littering or vandalism. Here are some places where you might come across shoe trees created by people throwing their shoes:

    1. College or University Campuses: Shoe trees are often found on college or university campuses, particularly in the United States. It's believed that this tradition originated as a way for students to celebrate milestones, such as graduation or the end of exams.

    2. Rural Areas or Countryside: In some rural areas or countryside locations, you might stumble upon shoe trees. These could be the result of local customs or the whimsical actions of individuals who decided to toss their shoes onto a tree.

    3. Tourist Attractions or Landmarks: Certain tourist attractions or landmarks have gained recognition for their shoe trees. People may visit these locations specifically to participate in the tradition or simply to witness the unusual sight.

    4. Hiking Trails or Nature Reserves: Occasionally, hikers or outdoor enthusiasts may come across shoe trees along hiking trails or in nature reserves. These might be the result of spontaneous shoe tosses by individuals who want to leave their mark or make a unique statement.
It's worth noting that the practice of throwing shoes into trees is not universally accepted, and in some cases, it may be seen as littering or defacing the environment. Always be mindful of local regulations and respect the environment when engaging in any such activity."

ChatGPT, a weird but cool thing you find on the internet. I’m constantly amazed at what this machine learning platform is pushing out.
