The tamarack loses it's needles and this definitely wasn't a tamarack, if zoomed in you can see the needles up top

I was told they loose their needles come fall, but sometimes not everyone of them, which would explain some needles left.

It’s definitely on the way out whatever it is. Sometimes they’ll put out a bumper crop in the death throes.
I like the jack pine call.

I worked with a research guy named Wyckoff in Escanaba "eons ago" that was raising a hybrid larch for outplanting at scale in the UP for Mead Paper. Back then the wintering deer herd would pounce on the first green thing they saw as the snow melted and baby red pine didn't last long. I think the Euro/Japanese grew faster than the native Tamarack there IDK. Those deciduous conifers didn't look like food and were allowed to live...well until the porcupine figured out they liked eating the bark off of them! I could see that making it around everywhere deer/forest regeneration/snow occur.

interesting that area is the very southern edge of Jack pine natural range. Throw in a little climate change and voila you get a very unhappy lookin' jack wishing it was further up north. Like the "lost pines" of Bastrop Texas. Furthest west of the yellow pine range ravaged by fire and disappearing too these days.

now let me see if I can find my favorite pics of larch.....um Larix occidentalis specifically.

there was a meme floating around of a stand of these in the form of a smiley face in a dense stand of doug-fir and shot in the autumn. Im not sure that's real thou.

They were ruining the pond...the dead trees would rot and erode the dam, not a good situation. Especially for the beavers :anonymous:
