Did you scrape the dirt? Indians would often cache a bunch of them in a hole to be used or worked later so you might want to go out and look carefully, maybe even probe a little with a thin steel rod.

I'm in shape (round) and made it up. It was tiring for sure, but I'm pretty live pretty sedentary (video games, no gym membership) and we hiked up the mountain from Estes Park East Portal campground into Glacier basin, rode the bus into the park proper and switched buses and rode to the bear lake trailhead. Then up to emerald with only a break near each lake along the way.
The first day we made half the hike into glacier basin to get acclimatized to the hiking at altitude. Slept in the campground, then up and in the second day, rode all the buses to see the park, then the 3rd day we hiked to the top. You can also pay a couple bucks a person at the visitors center in Estes Park to ride the bus in so you don't have to buy a timed parking pass as well. We did that one day as well. I wore a backpack and carried a couple gatorades and about a gallon of water between 3 containers, and some trail snacks in a small bear proof container.

I'd be using a 1/2 inch screen and sift the dirt that's being moved around. I'd bet that for every one you find there are ten more just under the surface.
