I was out in the woods with a young lady and we heard someone. A simple little tune being hummed continuously, moving slowly toward us. But it was odd because the humming continued and sounded too close and there was no one there. And then the tall grass rustled. I snuck up slowly and peered down to find a small porcupine humming a scale, five vibrating notes up and four down. And then he looked up at me with bleary, wet eyes and blinked a few times and quit humming. He turned around and ambled back the way he had come.

Who knew? Who knew that porcupines hum? I didn't. But they do... and I'm here to tell you about it.

That's awesome! I have heard them make a variety of little sounds before but nothing like that.

I've heard them laugh over and over again in the woods. Kinda a grizzled or weezy He He He He He. They might have been different notes but it was pretty subtle if so. I've heard it on several occasions so I'm with ya on this one! Now I came across one walking quietly toward a road while grouse hunting with a young lady. It had no idea we were there so i asked my friend to close her eyes and I sat her down near where I thought it would come out.... Then I kinda waited to see what would happen next. Who was going to freak out first? She was a little concerned but she stayed still until the porcupine saw her at the edge of the road. It was confused for a second and then decided it best to turn around and slowly go back.... kinda funny.

Just out for a quick stroll near my current campground and came across so old, handmade spindles. Someone had them gathered up at a little makeshift camp and fire ring. I think I’ll take them home. Better they end up in my yard rather than in a fire. I looked around to see if I could find more or find whatever larger thing they were a part of but no luck. Still cool though.

    Yeah.
Could those be spokes from an old wagon wheel?

And were they wearing underwear when they made them?

    Mysteries in the woods . . .

doubtful with the burls in the two - more likely a decorative railing on a porch or something. they're about 2' long too.
lets hope undies were involved! nekked woodworking sounds a little dangerous.

Never seen that type of sign before. How can you tell if the cones came from that tree or one of the other ones? :notsure:

Maybe there’s tiny signs on the cones too? :notsure:upload_2024-9-23_12-20-30.png

I used to have a contract with a man that shot cones outta trees with a .22. He also fed my bears every spring! He worked for me into his 80s.
I knew of a photo of him taking aim as a young man (circa 1969) in our company’s archives. I had a print made for his family after he passed.
This tree was 200’ in a wilderness area over 3000’ elevation and crazy slope. >70%? I don’t know how else they’d do it.

I couldn't really get a good picture because the lighting was bad and it's a tough subject but it was something super cool that I've never come across before. I was following a very old fence line that also had telephone poles along the line and there must have been two trees that were the right height and placement because somebody nailed the wire of the fence right to the tree back in the day and now however many years later that fence wire is like 12 or 13 ft up in the air grown right in the middle of the tree

found these in the woods about a month ago... i think they are giant fungi...they were on a trail and the bigger was the size of a volleyball give or take... heck maybe they are just decaying foam volleyballs.... I really didn't mess with them to much but the little one (still pretty big) looked like it was real.....
