Very cool! I didn't know there are covered bridges in Oregon, I'll have to plan a trip up there sometime it's such a beautiful state as well as northern Cal. So many places to explore! Very cool pictures btw.

Out poking around in the desert today and found this old mine shaft:

    photo 1.jpg

Looks like someone threw the wood on the grating so you can stand on top and look down on this:

    photo 2.jpg

Me, I'm all nope on that idea. There is no way to tell how far down the mine shaft goes.

Of course I didn't think of that. Dang:mad: I found another shaft in Nevada and counted 4 seconds to the bottom. That's like 250 feet.

Went on about a 20 mile bike ride this afternoon on the Schuklkill River Trail.

    http://www.schuylkillrivertrail.com/

Started at the Ikea parking lot in Conshohocken and took the trail up through part of Valley Forge State Park to the Perkiomen Trail.

One of the things I really wanted to see was an old abandoned train trestle over the Schuklkill.

Heres an abandoned stone building right along the river where we stopped to get a drink.[IMG]

The trestle is part of the same rail line I've posted about in this thread previously. The only access to it is from the bike trail.

    Looking towards the river:[IMG]

Here's a pano shot looking across. I did not feel comfortable going out any further - I could feel the old lumber giving under my feet.
I'm about 30' up and right where the trestle starts to go over the water.

Here's a shot looking back - you can see the Oaks Industrial area in the background.

There are some abandoned rail cars and engines a bit further up in the park but we stayed on the trail & actually headed back at this point.

Here is the spiral jetty on the shore of the Great Salt Lake. Its an art project from 1970. It's hard to tell from this angle but you can easily walk 1,500 feet to the center of the spiral. With the temps hovering around 95 degrees I wasn't too excited by that idea. The foreground is salt/alkali flats and the background is the lake. If I had to guess I'd say the lake is a good 1/2 mile away. Beautiful area for sure.

Something about that spiral reminds me of what's inside the Amboy Crater off Rt66 in SoCal. Anyone ever been?

I don't know this counts as being in the woods if the road is paved all the way, but it is deffinately cool. This is at the location where the golden spike was driven. About a quarter mile from here the gravel road to the spiral jetty begins and you can can drive on the old railway bed for miles and miles.

And a youtube video that does ZERO justice to the sound of the real thing.

Strangest thing we ever found was when we went dirt biking a few years ago and in a camp site way back in the bush there was a piece of corn stuck onto a log with a condom on it covered in.... Well you can guess

One thing I would love to do check out is something a history professor talked to the class about. Back when they were trying to get the CPR through the Rockies in the 1880s they could not find a pass to get through a section of mountain in a reasonable distance. The maximum rate of the slope a train can safely travel down is like 3% (or something) and this slope they found was 3.5% so the foreman rushed production because at this point the railway was in massive amounts of debt and way behind schedule and he assumed it would be fine. They loaded up a engine car with coal and the people required to run it and set it off down hill.

The train quickly smoked it's brakes and derailed and shot across this canyon and to the other side of the river. Sadly the crew died in the accident and they had to leave this train sitting there at the bottom of a valley where it still is today. I would love to do a road trip and check it out.

The other cool thing is that there is a steam ship that sunk on Harrison river that sits just beneath the bottom of the water and the smoke stack sits about a foot out of the water so you can kayak right on top of it.

Screwing around at work we found the site where the final scene of "the blair witch project" was filmed. It is on the property of a cold war nike missile silo base near Baltimore
