I found something similar at an unimproved campsite off the beaten path. I suppose they might have forgotten to take it with them... or just left it for the next guy.

But we clean up trash when we find it, so we took it home. Ours is made from a black plastic barrel, cut in half, and the seat attached to the flat end. I haven't had the chance to use it... but by damn I have it ready.

I'll see your backcountry toilets and raise you a backcountry helipad. Both with a view. We even got to see a helicopter land while we were camped there. They were looking for overdue climbers.

That's at Colchuck Lake in the Enchantments area of the Alpine Lakes Wilderness in the Eastern Washington Cascades. Camping permits are through a lottery and you can only camp in the zone you are awarded. We were lucky enough to get a permit to camp in the Colchuck zone in 2018. We hiked to the top of Aasgard pass (2000 foot gain in 3/4 mile) while we were there on a day trip, equally amazing views. It's probably the most amazing backpacking trip I've ever been on.

Thanks. I'd like to try that sometime, but Washington is a bit far for a hike. Maybe someday.

If you can get a core zone permit you are allowed to camp in any zone. Then you can do a thru-hike, which is about 20 miles and 4500' gain. Some people do it as a day hike - no permit needed if you're not camping. It's called the death march, and it's on my list of things to do.

That probably would kill me. Maybe I can try and time it to coincide with my natural death. That would be the perfect ending.

That’s awesome. I’ve only been there (Colchuck Peak) when the lake I crossed was frozen over. This was probably 20 years ago when I hiked there. Gorgeous scenery! Seems like I remember there being a Devils Pass/Peak or something as well. Neat to stir up good memories from years back just reading the name again. I could probably dig up the photos off my computer if I searched hard enough.
