I was cruising along at around 40MPH and about to go down a hill that is a speed trap. I tapped on the brakes to bring speed down a little before decent. About a second later down the hill and after tapping on brakes the truck downshifts and RPM went to about 2k. It felt like engine braking but I didn't have cruise control on.

Dry road and no traction issue.

Has this happened to anyone? If I let off the gas this shouldn't happen right?

Normal. These transmission downshift when you use your brakes. Wait until your going 65 mph and you ride your brakes a little just to slow slightly and your tranny downshifts twice to third and your engine revs to over 3500.

My alter ego. It is the part of me that comes up with all the really bad ideas I get. A head full of bad ideas.

    Totally normal, passive engine braking.
Took me a few weeks to get used to.

    Too much to list!
Both of my trucks do it. Quite normal and nice since it holds the speed instead of increase down a long hill having to constantly apply the brakes.

Normal ..... and as a friend told me, you'll get used to it and like it, he was right. You will learn to manage it because there are some oddities associated with it. The occasional downshift that you can only get around by accelerating is one. Also know that if you slap the shifter down one and right back to drive, it defeats the downshift.

It is engine braking and is a feature built into the transmission logic. The feature is intended to avoid burning up the brakes if you are going downhill while loaded to GCVWR. Chevy used to even advertise it on Silverado HD trucks with the Allison automatic.

Here I was thinking my 15 was having trans problems. I even disconnected the battery in hopes of resetting the apparent ECU that learned the previous owners driving style

I pop mine in neutral to avoid the harsh downshifting.
