Weird grinding sound when I accelerate

So my Tacoma started doing this about a month ago when it was cold, I would gradually accelerate and there was this grinding noise coming from the engine compartment. It would go away once the truck was up to operating temperature, but now is there all the time. Oil is good, trans oil is good, power steering oil is good, one of the belts has been squeaking but I regularly oil it with belt conditioner to quiet it down. I tried to locate the sound yesterday by popping the hood, and blipping on the throttle a few times, but it only does it when the truck is moving.

I will try and get a video of it up shortly, but in the meantime, any ideas fellow first genners? It's a 3.4 V6 with 4 speed automatic if that helps, thank you!

I have the same sound, sort of a rapid paced click-clack noise, it almost sounds like the front diff. It's a lot more noticeable under load driving up a hill. Almost sounds like dry gears (even though it isn't)

    I too am curious.

x2 on babysitting the belts with belt conditioner lol. How many miles on your truck?

Just rolled over 83k over the weekend. Had 75k when I got it, amazing little trucks!

    Reserected from the dead.
Mine was doing it as well before the frame rotted out. I just figured it was one if the idle pullys for the timing belt. I don't know for sure because I never took it apart, just bought the truck in my signature pic to replace it. That previous truck had 300I on the clock.

By the way, love the look of the ARB bumper. Any more pics? IM seriously thinking about that bumper. As you can see, I need one.one.

I was thinking the same thing. It's about due for a timing belt/water pump replacement. Going to probably get that done along with rebuilding the rear driveline over the summer. Reason why I am waiting is finances are a bit tight, and I absolutely cannot drive my car right now with all this snow and ice. Hoping the Taco holds together until then! Still working on video though.

Damn, okay, thanks for the input, everyone. Will have to get one of my mechanic buddies to go for a ride in it with me.

If you end up replacing the TB and WP, let me know if that fixes it.

Did you ever have any luck with this? I have the same thing but we are thinking it is coming from the fan/clutch bearing.

Two recent noises I corrected on mine with same symptoms related to temperature....
    1. Air intake plenum where it passes through inner fender wall. Wrapped the end of plastic plenum with the fuzzy side of a strip of Velcro where it touches metal. Sound went away.
    2. Heat shield on Cat just below the drivers seat. Welds had broken on thin metal. Reattached with stainless worm gear clamp. Sound went away.

Good luck... those "mystery" noises drive me crazy.

Will have a look at both of those things on mine! Thank you :)

It’s been 5 years since anyone has touched this thread but anyone find a solution? I’ve replaced the steering pump which was making a bit of noise but now as it is not as loud it’s still there
