Last summer I noticed it sounded like my ac compressor or the clutch was going out because in the evenings when I would first start up my truck and turn the ac on it would make a loud somewhat grinding noise. Also one day while driving I looked down and the ac light was blinking and the ac shutoff. That was end of summer so I put off getting it fixed. Yesterday I drove home using my ac the whole way and when I stopped to get gas I noticed the truck was idling funny and making a weird noise. When I got in the truck I smelled a burning plastic and noticed once again the ac light was blinking. Does anyone know if it’s ok to still drive and just not use the AC or if it’s something else that could be going on. I’ve noticed several times this year it idles weird when the ac is on. It’s a 2013 Tacoma

With the smell and the blinking A/C Light I would guess that the AC Compressor clutch burning out as an issue. Watch the AC Clutch when someone else turns it on and see if you can tell or look for the melting goo coming from the clutch coil.

Here are some links to read about this common issue.
