My ‘14 just turned 36,000 miles today. Recently I thought I heard a weird noise but blew it off as something on the radio. Today I realized that it’s coming from under the hood.

if I rev the engine with no load, no noise. At 1800 rpm under load it sounds like a heat shield, something vibrating, or maybe the cat guts blown out and loose. It has the same tone as a dust shield noise.

But here’s what worries me. A year or so ago, on my last free oil change under warranty, the numbskull at the dealership put 10 quarts of oil in my truck. 100 miles later I heard a weird noise, when I checked the oil it was 5 quarts overfilled. The dealer corrected the issue and supposedly made a note in my file that if I had any related engine issues, Toyota would cover it.

Does this sound familiar to anyone? I have a video that I’m trying to post but it keeps saying invalid extension.

To me it sound like a heat shield underneath is just vibrating against something when the RPM's are just right. It doesn't sound like an engine issue to me, although that's just my opinion. Do you have a GoPro to put under your truck. Maybe you can narrow down the location of where it's coming from.

Another thought, maybe you could try accelerating from a stop on a hill or incline to simulate load with someone outside (you perhaps) listening. Sometimes that helps. I narrowed down quite a few issues just doing things like that. Exhaust leak, intake rattle, etc.

Lol, it used to be a good dealership and I’ve bought most there and had 7 Toyota’s serviced there since 2007. The owner was killed in an accident and they got bought out, the Service Manager who always treated me well left. All dealings there since have been less than good experiences. I lost all loyalty to that dealership since the buy out, it’s a shame. Their service writer is a snippy little man and he always puts you on the defense.

No GoPro unfortunately, and it does sound like a heat shield. We’ve currently got 6” of snow on the ground so troubleshooting conditions are currently not good.

Update, I crawled under my Tacoma yesterday. The shield on the converter does not seem loose and the rivets look fine, but if I bang on it with my hand it makes one heck of a noise. I’ve emailed the dealer since they have their schedule off line for Covid and they’re not open on a Saturday. I’ve had trouble getting this dealership to call me back in the past so we’ll see what happens.

I also have a factory notification to have my frame checked for possible CRC undercoating so I’ll get that done too.
