OK I have a 2010 reg cab prerunner with right at 65k, when the car is warm and I'm sitting in traffic at a stop, whenever the motor goes to idle higher for the ac compressor to engage it starts to make a weird ticking noise, I know these motors tick, not like the 22re but same Ricking sound and the sound I have is not that sound, whenever I go up under the truck running and the noise happens I can "feel" it in the trans right where the drive shaft enters the trans on the pwice of metal, if someone can tell me how to upload a video I will. It does do it with the ac off , but not as bad or often. If someone can show me how to upload a video I will and thanks.

little more info.. it sounds almost like an exhaust leak, and it goes away when i hit the gas, does it in neutral and only when truck idles up. could it be a cutch of flywheel problem? just got the truck about 500 miles ago and just noticed it recently, someone please give some advice, ive searched and looked at all kinds of "weird noise" and "transmission shudder" threads but i cant find anyone that has the same problem. also truck sems to shift tempermental sometimes. sometimes shifts are smooth and other times shifts seem a little more jerky. no smells or hard vibrations or any other symptoms other than the noise itself. just trying to give a little more info as i know this stuff is extremely hard to identify through words on a screen. thanks again and ill see if i can get a you tube link.

well i just read that thread and that is definitely the same noise i have, i have a few questions though? if the dealer did the trans would they put the same clutch back in it? sounds to me like its a clutch issue after reading all that, esp if it stops making the noise when you push the clutch pedal in. another reason i think its clutch is that there are two TSB for the clutch, if was a trans problem i would igagine it effecting the way it drives more drasticly, but im no mechanic. is there a way to tell if i have a LUK clutch withought dropping trans, and plus it would explain my "tempermental" shifts. i really like this truck but i can def tell now that there is a weakness in the clutch, ive came across numerous threads on numerous sites about clutch issues. so if it walks like a duck... looks like ill be putting a new clutch in soon and hopefully that will be the ticket. Also anyone have this problem and go to the dealer for the TSB and get it fixed or find another soultion. i refuse to believe this is a normal sound, who in their right mind would make a car and hear this sound and say its normal? the injector sound i would consider "normal" but this sound is not normal, just because everyone has it and no one can fix it doesnt mean its normal, it means they're not looking in the right places for a solution or they dont know and just say "ehh.... they all do it.... its normal."

Link to video didnt work or at least it didnt work when I tried it .
From all the explanations and descriptions of the sound , I am going with gear clatter , not the clutch release bearing or as some people call it ..Throw out bearing .
The clutch release bearing is constant meaning it turns all the time . You would hear the release bearing all the time if it was faulty .
When the clutch pedal is pushed down to the floor , the pilot bearing in the back of the cranshaft supports the weight of the clutch . When the clutch is returned , the pressure plate , flywheel and clutch disc are clamped together and the input shaft of the transmission supports the load . I am certain you are hearing some gear clatter or possibly bearing noise . Transmissions are assembled with certain end play tolerances to allow for expansion and contraction . it sounds like there were a few transmissions built without checking tolerances or not adding the appropriate shims . Have seen this problem many times before . The old ZF 5 speeds used in the Fords were famous for this sound.
Have you checked to see if you have the proper fluid or if its topped up ?

Yes fluid is good, I'm not saying its the tob but the actual clutch assembly itself, the pressure plate and disc. Toyota had a tsb for a slipping clutch AND for a rattling clutch, the link is on Tacomahq.com they were two different tsb's with 2 different asin clucthes, depending on which issue you were having, and my clutch is def not slipping.I understand some gear clatter is normal, but for it to sound like this is not normal, and in the last video it does it while acclerating and decelerating in gear. From what everyone keeps saying, if its gear clatter it wouldn't do it when the trans is under load (accelerating/ decelerating) and mine is, and plus when the clutch pedal is pressed the noise stops, when there is "load" on clutch, I played with it today after the video and if you very gently play with the clutch while its making the noise, you can hear it fade away the further you press the clutch pedal. And when its making the loud noise and I press the pedal it dies down to what I would consider "normal" gear clatter. Audible but faintly noticeable

That thread, from what I remember, was just A/C related. Reading back on it now, they talk about the clutch being a player in the issue as well. I haven't ever messed with the clutch on mine, only noticed that the noise goes away when the A/C is off.

I basically wrote it off as normal and kept on driving, nothing has come to light as an issue yet in 5 years.

Just resurrecting this ancient thread to say that I, too have the same rattling sounds symptoms at idle. 2011 4x4 5 speed. Sounds disappears with clutch depressed and gets more noticeable with A/C load applied. I am planning to run it until it breaks.

Have a similar rattle on my 2010. When I first start truck and put AC on it is fine. After idling for a bit with the AC on it starts to rattle badly. Soon as I turn AC off it stops. Maddening I say!

Completely normal. They all do it. You're hearing one of the gearsets rattle back and forth against both sides of its teeth in the transmission. The A/C just brings the engine/transmission to the exact rpm needed to make that happen.

Yeah it sounds like it's gonna fall apart. Don't worry, it won't.

Mine does the same thing and I have an automatic. Annoying in drive-thrus but I just crank the tunes and forget it.
