Have you looked at the heat shields on the cat yet? Everyone is quick to overlook the simplest solutions sometimes.

Driving a stick isn't only about learning how to shift.
When to shift is also important.
Lugging causes pre-ignition and abnormal engine wear.

Just curious OP, is this your first manual or your first truck with a manual transmission?

No, my last truck was a first gen Tacoma.

My concern is that the sound, at least from what I can tell, is from the transmission...

My initial thought was the throw out bearing but I have never had MT issues before so I'm not sure how to diagnose the issue.

I get that if I was in the wrong gear under load, it could make that sound, perhaps just excessive stress.... But that is why I am gathering ideas and input....

I have a 19 6spd with kdmax I too got the 87 oct fuel tune. I hear the ping from time to time. I have ran a couple tanks of plus and super and I think it goes away for the most part. I definitely notice it more when the A/C is on. I’m glad I have a manual transmission but I’ll tell ya I miss the days of cars having throttle cables..

i haven’t looked at the heat shields but that’s cause it sounds like a ping to my ears. If it was shields I could get it to do it more often just through different rpm ranges. Mine happens mostly in the second and third gears

minor, TRD skid plate, front recovery points, Regken mud flaps, rear diff breather, AC drain pipe extended. Upgraded sound with active sub woofer, tonneau cover, CB radio.
Before digging dipper to anything in this case, check heat shields along your exhaust - very often they loose and starting rattling.

Thanks, I have the same issue as the guy was stating earlier. I can be cruising in neutral/rolling and all is well but when I’m in gear I hear random “chatter” per say.

That's what they do quiet often - changing load and rpm's, shifting gears, e.t.c.

Ahh I see. It’s weird to me cause it’s a new sound and feel for me. Its a 2016 and I have had it for 7 years and 105k rough miles. Going to change the fluid next.

85 is NOT recommended to be used
if your noise is not preignition, it is a throw out bearing

Was a determination on this ever made? Is it just normal 3rd gen gearbox noise? Im also experiencing this issue on a 2023 Sport 6MT. It's not my first manual. It's not pre ignition or a loose heat shield. It's definitely a gear box rattle. I first noticed it in 2nd under load between 1-2k rpm. Now its is also happening in 1st in the same rpm range. I haven't noticed it in 3rd on up. The truck is largely stock. The only mods are Trail Edition wheels with 265/75/16 ko3's.

The MY13 MT I’ve owned since new (sitting at 180l) has TB issues but those are usually called a chirp. When I was dealing with a rattle or “tick” while under load it was only evident with the rear slider open. Replacing the rear u-joints solved my ticking sounds, and helped me narrow down other creaks to worn body mount bushings. YMMV
