    Hi Folks,

    I have a 4x2 07 Automatic Tacoma TRD with 85k miles.

    I took the vehicle to get diagnosed for a howling noise in the rear end. Dealer quoted me at 2k, I need a new differential.
    Cost = 90 dollars

    I was able to get a quote at a Gear shop for about 900 dollars. The Carrier bearing on the drivers side is bad.
    Cost = Free

    After the dealer diagnosis, I have noticed that the RPMs are hovering around 1x before they were at 2x. Also, when shifting from 2nd to 3rd I hear a noise. When getting on the freeway, I do not see the RPMs change as they did before when shifting.

    I called the dealer and they want to charge me 90 dollars again to look at the truck, I explained that this shifting problem was not there before I took it into the dealer. They said that if it is something they did, then they will cover, but 99% of the time it is not their fault.

    Any clues? I took it in for a differential diagnosis and now it is making noises shifting, and the RPMs are not registering properly.

    Is there a sensor they may have moved, Anyone familiar with what parts may have been inspected?

    I submitted my online survey on mytoyotavoice.com, an hour later I got a call from my service advisor. He mentioned they will take a look at it now. Going to take it in tomorrow for free.

    It was the pinion bearing that was bad. Replaced at a gear shop for ~600
