Hey Im seeing if anyone has had a hard starter engagement issue after Luk flywheel and toyota clutch replacment? about 1 in 5 starts kinda hitting hard as starters kicks. Ive tried shimming starter at different angles and straight out with 1 washer on each bolt. Everything to do with the new clutch feels amazing its just the start. thanks for any help guys

Sounds like the problem was introduced with a change in clutch parts. If the ring gear is in the same spot then the starter should be fine

I think you mean Luk brand flywheel right? Did you compare new and old on the bench before install?

Sure you can try a new starter but don't be surprised if it doesn't help

You either have a coincidental starter failure, a ring gear issue or the something isn't bolted up correctly

    Good luck

Fish a camera in the bellhousing and take a look. Did a clutch and flywheel on my 92 camry and less than 10'000kms later the ring gear was walking off and grinding on the back of the engine.... good thing I kept the factory flywheel. Got that machined, now just need the time to reinstall everything

Luk is good. I find their clutches very smooth, tough as nails and durable. Only thing (kinda, not really) bad I can say about the clutches is I find they take a long time to fully break in.

That said no manufacture is perfect and especially with asian vehicles, I feel like they don't fare well with anything but an OEM flywheel, and I was reminded of that with my flywheel experience mentioned above.

Still, the actual problem should be pinpointed first. You can try putting some gear marker on the starter teeth then using it a few times to see where it's contacting. If it's near the edge then unfortunately you may have to take down the tranny again for further inspection.

OP, early Tacos came off the assembly line with either LUK or Aisin clutch components. There is nothing in the VIN to identify which clutch your truck came.

Unfortunately, the LUK clutch was plaugued with chronic problems on both the 5- and 6-speed Tacomas. There are several TSBs to address the matter and as IIRC instructions in the TSB to replace the problematic LUK clutches with the Aisin components.

Unfortunately, the LUK problems persisted and Toy quietly dumped them as a supplier of these components in about 2012 or 2013. Not totally sure when production trucks started to appear with only Aisin clutches.
