Hello, recently test drove a 2019 TRD 4x4 off road. With 65k miles. 6 speed M/T lifted on 285s. It’s a sharp looking truck with everything I’ve been looking for. But I drove it 20 miles then it started shuttering and lost power and had the check engine light and trac light on. Dealer came and towed it. They called today saying it was low fuel pressure. Siting it was backed down a steep rock to get it to me. I’m weirded how it took 20 miles for air to work its way through. Any suggestions? I’m thinking running. It’s a good price for what it is. Don’t want to miss on a good deal.

Update, the code was a p0087
Supposedly, salesman and techs have been driving it and the code has not returned. The salesman offered a 6 month bumper to bumper free warranty. Still not convinced.

Do not worry that the truck failed during the test drive ... "it is MUUUUUCH better now!". Good thing you took more than a 5 minute spin around the block.

I can't imagine how it'd take more than a few seconds for air I think the line to reach the injectors.

There was a fuel pump recall,, but if that's the culprit, I would be questioning as to why they didn't do it before it failed.
But, it could have been something else. I would tell them you want an independent inspection by a shop of your choice, if you are still seriously considering.
Anything can break, so I am not calling it a lemon by any means.

Be sure and take the sales guy with you so you'll have someone to talk to if it fails again.

Dont trust dealer, stay away from that one.

Tacomas just like 4runners are very beloved, and when people DO SELL them, its usually either trade in or something is wrong with them. Not saying all the time, but most.

+1 for fuel pump recall. don't really trust all techs at dealerships to check everything. Or maybe even someone new or unfamiliar with Toyotas.

What you described in your test drive is exactly what I experienced in my truck except I was going much faster/further/longer than 20 mins. Fortunately I made it to an empty parking lot. After the fuel pump was replaced I did not have an issue again. My truck is also a 2019 trd off road 4x4 but automatic and had around 50k miles when this happened to me. Bought my truck new so I can say for sure no issues before and after the fuel pump was replaced.

    - Run the truck's VIN through this site and see if the fuel pump recall has been done. If the recall work hadn't been completed, then it's an easy free-of-charge fix: https://www.toyota.com/recall If the recall work had been completed, it could be a workmanship issue, a hose leaking back into the tank, etc.

    - How much fuel was in the tank when you test drove it?

    - Since the truck is modded, does it happen to have an aftermarket intake? If so, it could be the source of issues, leak in the intake pipe, fuel pressure regulator hose not hooked up, MAF sensor gummed up, etc.

With 2024 sales down 30% if you wait a little longer you might find a 2024 for the same price as that one, if you want to risk a 2024....

The Vin# should tell if recalls were completed. This should come at least with a 30 day warranty.

That’s the problem with dealer trades alll they do is a visual check on the vehicle prior to sale wash it and slap a sticker on it . To me personally that would be a sign to run as far as you can . Maybe it’s a fuel pump or tourque converter going out . Either way this would be sign to stay away .

That's fuel rail pressure low: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads/fuel-rail-system-pressure-low-p0087.724319/

Either the fuel pump recall wasn't done or it was done and the work was botched. If you can negotiate a fuel pump and filter replacement, it would be sufficient risk reduction to buy.

Bring a blue driver to the next truck you check out it will let you run all the stored codes so you can see the proper history

Oh okay, so it fixed itself? (Read sarcasm)
Unless they have a real fix, I’d move on. Just resetting codes or driving it until it does, isn’t giving me a lot of confidence.

Come to think of it, if the selling dealer is a Toyota dealer, they typically wouldn't be able to sell the vehicle with open recalls. I suspect the recall work was done but with botched workmanship.
