I have a weird issue with my TRS projector setup that just decided to start about 3 weeks ago. It all started when my passenger side just would not fire, and then occasionally when I would drive it would fire up and work just fine until I turned them off again. I thought OK... I have had my current setup in there for about 3 years. Wouldn't surprise me if some of the components are starting to get tired. I ended up purchasing an entirely new HID kit (ulbs/ballasts/ignitors/relay harness). I install it and everything seems to be running hunky-dory for about 2 days.

Fast forward to current day and I am still fighting with these things. Here are my observations:
    • The light will never come on the first time. Generally, when I cycle the lights on/off both sides will eventually fire up after a few tries. This morning I could not get the passenger side to fire.
    • If both lights do come on they remain on without issue.
    • The problem side is ALWAYS the passenger side. I have swapped all equipment more than once (ballasts, ignitors, etc), changed grounding points, the works. Only thing I have not tried to do is to take the trigger from the passenger side OEM plug, but the problem there is that the power lead wouldn't reach any longer.
    • The lights no longer turn off together. When cycling the headlights back to off, the passenger side will stay lit for fractionally longer. It is probably less than half of a second, but it is noticeable that they are not turning off at the same time.
I have read some threads on HID planet with people stating similar conditions as my own, and also stating that it is a Toyota thing. My whole deal is that I have been running HIDs/Projectors for over 5 years and have never had an issue with this in my truck.

I rarely am at a loss when it comes to electrical issues, but I am reaching out on this one... Frustrated. Tagging a few who I think may be able to help, but if anyone has suggestions please send them my way!

    Colton,

That is super strange. Especially having the kit work flawless for 3 years and you're having the issue with the old kit as well as new kit. Not sure if it's vehicle specific, but my tacoma's passenger side is a second or so delay when turning off and on. Of course, grounding points are the biggest thing. Is your grounding point metal to metal? If there's paint, I suggest scuffing it a bit. I know I had to move my grounding point twice, even after running it flawless for about a month, kinda weird. I don't think swapping the trigger from the driver's side to the passenger side will help it to be honest. Morimoto D2S kit correct?

I had similar issue with passenger side not turning on, it was a bad ground. Fixed that, and it comes on every time now.

I kinda ran into the same thing. Mine worked great. I love them. Every now and then the drivers side would not come on. Turn them off then back on and boom, it works, all is right. Last night i left work they worked fine . I stopped for dinner and got back in and drivers side wasnt on. turned them off then drivers side came on. Thinking something wasnt right, I saw a reflection and my passenger side wasnt on. Cycled them again and it swapped again. Did this several times and then both just stopped completely. Lucky for me I was in my neighborhood and my DRLs and fogs were enough to get me home. Came into work this morning they still didnt fire. I swapped in my stock bulbs and they work fine. I sent an email to the retrofit source and waiting a reply. I love the kit. Like i said, everything has been working great untill recently. I bought my kit in Feb 2016. I did smell something funny like a hot electrical kind of smell though. maybe the relays? I dont know. Once i hear from them Ill follow up.

@memario1214 Just to confirm... I know you said you bought a whole new wiring relay harness along with other components, but did you install the new harness? Or just end up using the existing one?

The reason I ask is because I'm troubleshooting my own HID problem. (Retrofit from Rechelon/Burt. Ran fine for 3 years, now both low-beams won't turn on intermittently)...... and I think my problem is due to the MotoControl module do-hickey thing. I have a new wiring relay harness on the way from TRS to see if it is indeed the problem.

Interesting. I would check the relays. You can also swap the relays from one side to another and see if the problem follows. We are doing our best to catch up on all of the emails!

Finally got to checking out what happened to my lights. Since I live 30 min south of ATL i just went up to Retrofit Source. Carlos took care of me and bench tested all my stuff. Turns out both bulbs were bad. They looked fine, no blackness or blown look. I think that even surprised them a little. He replaced the bulb under warranty and all is right now. TRS is the shit!!

I didn’t. I got a new relay and it helped a bit, but when it was cold out they still had attitude occasionally. Don’t have the truck as of a few months ago so I don’t have a true solution.
